Step by step

0.375 = 375/1000 = 3/8

  1. Read the decimal as a fraction over a power of 10: the digits go on top and a 1 with one zero per decimal place goes below, so 0.375 = 375/1000.
  2. Divide the top and the bottom by their greatest common factor, 125, to reach lowest terms: 3/8.
  3. In other forms it is the mixed number 3/8 and 37.5% as a percent.

Formula

decimal = digits / 10places
fraction = (digits / g) / (10places / g), g = greatest common factor
percent = decimal × 100
digits
the decimal without its point, for example 375 for 0.375
places
the number of digits after the decimal point
g
the greatest common factor of the top and the bottom, found with the Euclidean algorithm

How it works

To write a decimal as a fraction, put its digits over a power of 10 with one zero for each decimal place, then divide the top and the bottom by their greatest common factor. 0.375 has three places, so it is 375/1000, and both numbers divide by 125, which leaves 3/8. 3.66 is 366/100 = 183/50, or 3 33/50 as a mixed number, because 183 = 3 × 50 + 33. 0.2 is 2/10 = 1/5, and a negative decimal keeps its sign: -0.75 = -3/4. The calculator uses exact whole-number arithmetic, so nothing is rounded.

Some decimals come from fractions that never end: 1/3 is 0.3333... and 1/7 is 0.142857142857.... If you type only the digits you can see, the exact fraction is huge: 0.3333333 is exactly 3,333,333/10,000,000. Closest fraction finds the best fraction below a denominator limit from the continued fraction of your number. 0.3333333 gives 1/3, 0.142857 gives 1/7 and 0.11428571428 gives 4/35. It also shows the difference, so you can judge the fit. With limits of 10, 100 and 1,000, 3.14159 gives 22/7, 311/99 and 355/113.

Rulers and tape measures stop at halves, quarters, eighths, sixteenths, thirty-seconds and sixty-fourths. Nearest 1/n multiplies the decimal by n, rounds to a whole number of steps (halves round up) and reduces: 0.4 in is 6.4 sixteenths, which rounds to 6/16 = 3/8 in, off by 0.025 in, and to the nearest 1/32 it is 13/32 in. The chart lists every 1/64 of an inch with its decimal and its millimeters; for inches to centimeters see the inches to cm converter.

To go from a fraction to a decimal, divide the top by the bottom: 1/8 = 0.125 and 7/8 = 0.875. A mixed number first becomes one fraction (the whole number times the denominator, plus the numerator): 2 4/8 = 20/8 = 2.5. In a negative mixed number the minus sign applies to the whole number and the fraction together, so -2 1/2 = -(2 × 2 + 1)/2 = -5/2 = -2.5. The decimal ends when the denominator, in lowest terms, has only 2 and 5 as prime factors (8 = 2 × 2 × 2, 625 = 5 × 5 × 5 × 5). Every other denominator repeats: 1/3 repeats one digit, 1/7 six digits and 1/97 ninety-six. The calculator reports the length of the repeating block. To add, subtract, multiply or divide fractions use the fraction calculator, and for a part of a total as a percent the percentage calculator.

The formula

The exact and closest modes read the decimal as typed (its shortest digit string) and work with whole numbers of any size, so 0.11428571428 becomes 11428571428/100000000000 before it is reduced to 2857142857/25000000000. Up to 15 decimal places are accepted. The closest fraction uses the convergents of the continued fraction and the last allowed semiconvergent, whichever is nearer, which is the best fraction with a bounded denominator.

Nearest 1/n rounds half up: 0.03125 is exactly halfway between 0 and 1/16 and gives 1/16. Fraction to decimal divides in floating point and shows 10 places. For the repeating block, take the denominator in lowest terms and remove every factor 2 and 5: if 1 is left, the decimal ends and the length is 0. Otherwise the length is the smallest number of digits k for which 10 to the power k leaves a remainder of 1 when divided by what is left.

Example

What is 3.66 as a fraction?

  1. 3.66 has two digits after the point, so write it over 100: 366/100.
  2. The greatest common factor of 366 and 100 is 2. Divide both by it: 183/50. As a mixed number that is 3 33/50.

3.66 written as a fraction in lowest terms is 183/50.

Frequently asked questions

How to change a decimal to a fraction, with an example?

Write the digits over 1 followed by one zero per decimal place, then reduce. 0.75 has two places, so it is 75/100; both numbers divide by 25, which gives 3/4. 2.4 is 24/10 = 12/5, or 2 2/5 as a mixed number.

What is 0.11428571428 as a fraction?

Exactly, it is 2,857,142,857/25,000,000,000: 11 decimal places, reduced by the common factor 4. The digits follow the repeating 142857 pattern, and the closest fraction with a denominator up to 100 is 4/35. Choose Closest fraction to get it.

What is 0.2 as a fraction?

0.2 is 1/5. It has one decimal place, so it is 2/10, and both numbers divide by 2. In the same way 0.25 is 1/4, 0.5 is 1/2, 0.125 is 1/8 and 0.6 is 3/5.

What is 3.66 as a fraction?

3.66 is 183/50, or 3 33/50 as a mixed number. It has two decimal places, so it is 366/100, and both numbers divide by 2. The whole part 3 stays in front and 0.66 becomes 33/50.

How do you convert a fraction to a decimal?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. 1/8 is 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125, 7/8 is 0.875, 3/4 is 0.75 and 5/16 is 0.3125. For a mixed number add the whole part: 2 1/2 is 2.5, and -2 1/2 is -2.5 (the minus sign applies to both parts). Choose Fraction → decimal above to try any fraction.

What are 1/8 and 7/8 as decimals?

1/8 is 0.125 and 7/8 is 0.875. The other eighths are 3/8 = 0.375 and 5/8 = 0.625. Eighths always end, because 8 is 2 × 2 × 2, and a denominator made only of 2s and 5s gives a decimal that ends.

How do you turn a repeating decimal into a fraction?

Call the number x. For 0.333... multiply by 10: 10x − x = 3, so x = 3/9 = 1/3. For 0.142857 repeating multiply by 1,000,000: 999,999x = 142,857, so x = 1/7. If you only have the visible digits, use Closest fraction: 0.3333333 gives 1/3.

How do you convert a decimal inch to a fraction?

Pick the finest mark on your ruler and use Nearest 1/n. 0.375 in is exactly 3/8 in. 0.4 in is 3/8 in to the nearest 1/16 (6.4 steps round to 6) and 13/32 in to the nearest 1/32. The chart lists every 1/64 in with millimeters.

Which fractions have decimals that end?

A fraction in lowest terms ends when its denominator has no prime factor other than 2 and 5: 1/8 = 0.125, 1/20 = 0.05 and 1/625 = 0.0016. Any other denominator repeats. 1/3 repeats 1 digit, 1/7 repeats 6 digits and 1/97 repeats 96 digits.

Can every decimal be written as a fraction?

Every decimal that ends or repeats can, because it is a ratio of two whole numbers. A decimal that never ends and never repeats, such as pi or the square root of 2, cannot. Fractions only approximate it: 22/7 and 355/113 are close to pi.

How do you write a decimal as a mixed number?

Keep the whole part and turn the digits after the point into a fraction: 3.66 is 3 and 66/100, which reduces to 3 33/50, and 2.75 is 2 3/4. Starting from an improper fraction gives the same result: 183 ÷ 50 is 3 with remainder 33.

How are a decimal, a fraction and a percent related?

They are three ways to write the same number. Move the decimal point two places to get the percent and put the digits over a power of 10 to get the fraction: 0.375 = 3/8 = 37.5%. The calculator shows the percent for every result.
