Ounces to Pounds Converter
ConversionsChoose oz to lb or lb to oz and enter the weight. You get decimal pounds, the same weight as pounds plus ounces, and grams and kilograms. Two charts of common weights follow below.
Step by step
40 / 16 = 2.5
- A pound has 16 ounces, so divide by 16: 40 / 16 = 2.5 lb.
- The whole pounds are 2. The remaining ounces are 40 − 16 × 2 = 8, so the weight is 2 lb 8 oz.
- In metric, multiply by 28.349523125 g per ounce: 40 × 28.349523125 = 1,134 g.

How it works
The US customary pound holds exactly 16 ounces. To convert ounces to pounds, divide by 16: 40 oz is 2.5 lb and 130 oz is 8.125 lb. To convert pounds to ounces, multiply by 16: 1 lb is 16 oz, 7.5 lb is 120 oz and 130 lb is 2,080 oz. So 16 oz make 1 lb, 8 oz are half a pound, and 32 oz are 2 lb.
To read the answer as pounds and ounces, keep the whole pounds and show the remainder in ounces. 35 ounces is 2 pounds (32 oz) plus 3 ounces, and 86 ounces is 5 pounds plus 6 ounces. A decimal works the same way: in 8.125 lb the part 0.125 × 16 is 2 oz, so the weight is 8 lb 2 oz. Baby weights, parcels and recipes often use this lb-oz form, and the converter shows both.
The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, so one ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams. These are avoirdupois units. Gold, silver and other precious metals are weighed in troy ounces (31.1035 g, 12 to the troy pound), gemstones in carats of 200 mg, and a fluid ounce measures volume, not weight; see the cups to ounces converter for that. For kilograms see the kg to lbs converter.
The formula
The factor 16 is exact, so the pounds result has no rounding error; only the displayed digits are rounded. The metric values use the 1959 agreement between the US, the UK and other countries that fixed the pound at 0.45359237 kg.
When the ounces are a decimal, the remainder is a decimal too: 100.5 oz is 6 lb 4.5 oz. When you add extra ounces to pounds, every 16 extra ounces carry into one more pound, so 0 lb 20 oz is 1.25 lb.
Example
How many pounds are 130 ounces, and is 130 oz more than 8 lb?
- Divide by 16: 130 / 16 = 8.125 lb.
- Eight whole pounds use up 8 × 16 = 128 oz, which leaves 2 oz, so 130 oz is 8 lb 2 oz. That is just above 8 lb, which is 128 oz.
130 oz = 8.125 lb, which is 8 lb 2 oz or 3.6854 kg.

How many ounces are in a pound?
A pound has 16 ounces, so 1 oz is 1/16 lb, or 0.0625 lb. Half a pound is 8 oz, a quarter pound is 4 oz and 3 lb are 48 oz. These are the avoirdupois ounces of food labels and kitchen scales; a troy pound, used for gold and silver, has 12 troy ounces.
