Surface Area Calculator

Math

Pick a shape, choose a unit and enter its measurements. You get the total surface area, the side area without the flat bases, the base area, the volume, the surface area to volume ratio and the total in square feet and square meters.

Use this one unit for every length. The area comes out in that unit squared and the volume in that unit cubed.

The height of the box, cylinder, cone or pyramid, measured straight up from the base.

The radius of the circle or sphere, which is half the diameter. For a spherical cap, the radius of the whole sphere.

Use a period for decimals, like 12.5. Commas for thousands are fine. The result updates as you type.Decimals with a period, like 12.5

Result: Total surface area (square inches)

207.35

A cylinder with radius 3 and height 8 inches has a total surface area of 207.35 square inches: 150.8 for the side and 56.55 for the two ends.

  • Side or curved area, without the flat bases: 150.8
  • Flat base area: 56.55
  • Volume: 226.19
  • Surface area to volume ratio: 0.917
  • Total surface area in square feet: 1.44
  • Total surface area in square meters: 0.134

Step by step

2π × 3 × (3 + 8) = 207.35 square inches

  1. The side of a cylinder unrolls into a rectangle as tall as the cylinder (8 inches) and as wide as the circle around it, 2π × 3. Its area is 150.8 square inches.
  2. The two ends are circles of radius 3 inches. Together they cover 2 × π × 3² = 56.55 square inches.
  3. The total is 150.8 + 56.55 = 207.35 square inches. The volume is 226.19 cubic inches, and the ratio of surface area to volume is 0.917.

Formula

Cylinder: S = 2πr2 + 2πrh
Surface area to volume ratio = S / V
S
total surface area, in the square of the unit you chose
V
volume, in the cube of the unit you chose

How it works

The surface area of a solid is the total area of its outer surface, measured in square units. To find it, cut the solid into parts that are easy to measure and add them up. A box has six rectangles. A cylinder has two circles and a side that unrolls into one rectangle as tall as the cylinder and as wide as the circle’s circumference, so S = 2πr² + 2πrh. A cone has a circle and a side that unrolls into a sector, S = πr² + πrs. A sphere has no flat parts at all, and Archimedes showed that its surface is exactly four times the area of its largest circle, S = 4πr².

For every shape the calculator gives the total surface area, the side or curved area without the flat bases, the flat base area, the volume and the ratio of surface area to volume. A cylinder with radius 3 and height 8 has a side of 150.80, bases of 56.55 and a total of 207.35 square units, and a volume of 226.19 cubic units. Enter every length in the unit you choose. The area comes out in that unit squared, and the calculator also converts the total to square feet and square meters, so a result in inches also tells you the square feet.

Mixing units is the usual mistake. Convert the lengths first, because 1 foot is 12 inches but 1 square foot is 144 square inches. All lengths must be positive, a triangular prism needs three sides that can form a triangle (each shorter than the other two together), and a spherical cap cannot be taller than the diameter of its sphere. For flat shapes, such as the area of a circle, use the circle calculator; for the area of a triangle, the triangle calculator; for the floor area of a room or house, the square footage calculator.

The formula

Every formula comes from cutting the solid into parts you can lay flat. The side of a cylinder unrolls into a rectangle of height h and width 2πr, the side of a cone into a sector of area πrs. For a spherical cap, Archimedes’ result holds: the curved area depends only on the cap height, 2πRh, wherever the cutting plane is. The flat face of the cap is a circle of radius √(h(2R − h)). A capsule is a sphere of radius r with a cylinder of length L inserted in the middle.

The side area is the surface without the flat bases, which is what you need for paint on a pipe, a label on a can or the walls of a room. The total adds the bases. A sphere and a capsule have no flat bases, so their side area is the whole surface. The ratio S / V has the unit 1 / length. Nothing is rounded until the result is shown, and the measurements are taken as exact.

Example

What is the surface area of a cylinder with radius and height equal to 2 inches?

  1. The side unrolls into a rectangle 2 inches tall and 2π × 2 = 12.57 inches wide, so its area is 25.13 square inches.
  2. Each end is a circle of area π × 2² = 12.57 square inches, and the two ends together cover 25.13.
  3. The total is 25.13 + 25.13 = 50.27 square inches, which is exactly 16π.
  4. The volume is π × 2² × 2 = 25.13 cubic inches, so the ratio of surface area to volume is 2.

A cylinder with radius 2 and height 2 inches has a total surface area of 50.27 square inches: 25.13 for the side and 25.13 for the two ends.

Frequently asked questions

How to calculate surface area?

Surface area is the total area of all the faces or curved surfaces of a solid, so you add up the areas of its parts. For a box, find the area of each rectangle and add all six. For a cylinder, add the two circles, 2πr², and the side that unrolls into a rectangle, 2πrh. Choose the shape above, enter the lengths in one unit, and the calculator adds the parts for you.

How to calculate the SA?

SA is short for surface area, often written S. Pick the solid, then use its formula: 6a² for a cube, 2(lw + lh + wh) for a box, 2πr(r + h) for a cylinder, 4πr² for a sphere. The calculator applies these and also gives the side or lateral area, the flat bases, the volume and the surface area to volume ratio.

What is the formula for surface area?

It depends on the solid. Cube: 6a². Rectangular prism: 2(lw + lh + wh). Cylinder: 2πr² + 2πrh. Cone: πr² + πrs, with slant height s = √(r² + h²). Sphere: 4πr². Hemisphere: 3πr². Square pyramid: a² + 2as, with s = √(h² + (a/2)²). The formula box under the calculator lists all ten shapes, including the triangular prism, capsule and spherical cap.

How do I calculate the surface area of a sphere?

Use S = 4πr², where r is the radius. For a radius of 3 inches that is 4 × π × 9 = 113.10 square inches. If you know the diameter d, use S = πd². The surface of a sphere is exactly four times the area of its largest circle, πr². Choose "Sphere" above to try your own radius.

How do I find the side of a cube given area?

Divide the surface area by 6 and take the square root: a = √(S / 6). A cube with a surface area of 150 square inches has edges of √25 = 5 inches, and 96 square inches gives √16 = 4 inches. If you only know the area of one face, the side is the square root of that area.

How do I find the radius of a sphere given area?

Divide the surface area by 4π and take the square root: r = √(S / 4π). A sphere with a surface area of 100 square meters has r = √(100 / 12.566) = 2.82 meters. You can check the answer by entering that radius under "Sphere" and comparing the surface area.

What is the surface area of a cylinder with radius and height equal to 2 in?

It is 2πr² + 2πrh = 2π × 4 + 2π × 4 = 16π, about 50.27 square inches. Of that, 25.13 is the two circular ends and 25.13 is the curved side. Choose "Cylinder", enter 2 for the radius and 2 for the height, and keep inches as the unit.

How do I calculate the surface area of a house?

Treat the house as a box plus a roof. The four walls are 2 × height × (length + width), minus the windows and doors. A 30 by 20 foot house with 10-foot walls has 2 × 10 × (30 + 20) = 1,000 square feet of wall, which is the side area of a rectangular prism. A pitched roof is larger than the floor plan: for a 6/12 pitch multiply the footprint by √(6² + 12²) / 12 = 1.118, so 600 square feet becomes about 671.

What is the difference between lateral and total surface area?

Lateral (side) surface area counts only the sides, not the flat bases. Total surface area adds the bases. For a cylinder with radius 3 and height 8, the side is 2πrh = 150.80 and each base is πr² = 28.27, so the total is 150.80 + 56.55 = 207.35. Use lateral area for a label around a can or paint on the walls of a room, and total area for wrapping the whole object.

How do I find the surface area of a cone?

Add the base circle πr² and the side πrs, where s is the slant height √(r² + h²). For r = 3 and h = 4 the slant height is 5, so S = 9π + 15π = 24π, about 75.40. Enter the height measured straight up from the base. If you know the slant height instead, use it for s directly in the formula.

How do I find the surface area of a triangular prism?

Add the two triangular ends and the three rectangular sides: S = 2T + (a + b + c) × L, where T is the area of the triangle and L the length of the prism. For a 3-4-5 triangle and a length of 10, T = 6, so S = 12 + 12 × 10 = 132. The calculator finds T from the three sides with Heron’s formula and rejects sides that cannot form a triangle.

What is the surface area to volume ratio?

It is the surface area divided by the volume, so it shows how much surface there is for each unit of volume. For a sphere it equals 3 / r, so a radius of 3 gives a ratio of 1 and a radius of 10 gives 0.3. Smaller objects have a larger ratio, which is why small pieces dissolve, cool or react faster than a large piece of the same material.

How do I find the surface area of a pipe?

Use the cylinder with the pipe’s outer radius and its length, and read the side area, 2πrh. That is the outside surface for paint or insulation. For a 10-foot pipe with an outer radius of 2 inches, choose inches, enter a height of 120 and a radius of 2: 2π × 2 × 120 = 1,507.96 square inches, or 10.47 square feet. For the inside surface use the inner radius.

Why is a hemisphere 3πr² and not 2πr²?

The curved surface of a hemisphere is 2πr², half of the sphere. A solid hemisphere also has a flat circular face of πr², so the total is 3πr². The calculator shows both parts: the curved one as the side area and the flat one as the base area. For a bowl without its top, the surface you want is the side area, 2πr².

What are a capsule and a spherical cap?

A capsule is a cylinder with a hemisphere on each end. Its surface is 4πr² + 2πrL, where L is the length of the straight middle. A spherical cap is the piece of a sphere cut off by a plane. With sphere radius R and cap height h, the curved surface is 2πRh and the flat circle is πh(2R − h).

How do I find the surface area of a combined shape?

Add the surface areas of the parts and leave out the faces that are joined, on both parts. A cylinder with a cone on top, for example, has the cylinder’s side and bottom plus the cone’s side; the circle where they meet is hidden on both. Use the side area and base area results of each piece to build the sum.

How do I get square feet or square meters?

Enter the lengths in feet and the result is in square feet. If you use another unit, the calculator also converts the total surface area to square feet and square meters. Convert before you square: 12 inches make 1 foot, but 144 square inches make 1 square foot. A square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square meters.

What units does surface area use?

Square units of length: square inches (in²), square feet (ft²), square yards, square centimeters or square meters (m²). The SI unit is the square meter. Volume uses cubic units, and the ratio of surface area to volume uses 1 over a length, such as 1/in. The foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 meters, which fixes all the conversions on this page.
