How it works
A foot is 12 inches, and an inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, so one foot is exactly 30.48 cm and one meter is about 3.2808 feet. To convert feet and inches to centimeters, turn everything into inches first and multiply by 2.54: 5 ft 9 in is 5 × 12 + 9 = 69 inches, and 69 × 2.54 = 175.26 cm.
The other way, divide the centimeters by 2.54 to get inches, then split them into whole feet and the inches left over. 180 cm / 2.54 = 70.87 inches; 70.87 / 12 = 5 remainder 10.87, so 5 ft 10.9 in. The converter rounds the inches to one decimal before splitting, so you never see 12.0 inches next to a whole foot. It also shows the decimal feet (5.906 ft), which is not the same as 5 ft 9 in.
In the US, height is given in feet and inches (5′10″), while most other countries use centimeters or meters. The chart below lists heights from 4 ft to 7 ft in steps of one inch. For lengths in inches only, such as screen sizes, use the cm to inches converter.
The formula
Decimal feet and feet plus inches are easy to confuse: 5.9 ft is 5 feet plus 0.9 × 12 = 10.8 inches, so 5 ft 10.8 in, not 5 ft 9 in. To get inches from the decimal part, always multiply by 12.
One meter is 100 / 30.48 = 3.28084 feet, or 39.37 inches. Ten meters are 32.81 feet. Building plans and land measures in the US use feet; the survey foot once used for land records differs from the international foot by only 2 parts per million.
