Feet in a Yard: Feet to Yards Converter

Conversions

Choose the unit you start with and enter a length. A yard is exactly 3 feet, so feet to yards is a division by 3. You also get the answer as whole yards plus feet, and in inches, meters and miles.

Result: In yards

1yd

3 ft = 1 yd, or 36 in and 0.9144 m.

  • Whole yards: 1 yd
  • And feet: 0 ft
  • In inches: 36 in
  • In meters: 0.9144 m
  • In miles: 0.000568 miles

Step by step

3 / 3 = 1

  1. A yard is 3 feet, so divide the feet by 3: 3 / 3 = 1 yd.
  2. Whole yards and the feet left over: 1 yd 0 ft.
  3. In inches, multiply by 12: 3 × 12 = 36 in. In meters, multiply by 0.3048: 3 × 0.3048 = 0.9144 m.

Formula

yards = feet / 3
1 yd = 3 ft = 36 in = 0.9144 m
whole yards = floor(feet / 3)
feet left over = feet - 3 × whole yards

How it works

A yard is exactly 3 feet, so to convert feet to yards you divide by 3, and to convert yards to feet you multiply by 3. 15 feet is 15 ÷ 3 = 5 yards, and 4 yards is 4 × 3 = 12 feet. The relationship is exact, not rounded: since 1959 the yard has been defined as exactly 0.9144 meters and the foot as exactly 0.3048 meters, and 3 × 0.3048 = 0.9144. A yard is also 36 inches.

Many lengths do not divide evenly by 3, so the converter also shows the result as whole yards plus feet. 100 feet is 33.33 yards, which is 33 yards 1 foot, because 33 × 3 = 99 feet and 1 foot is left over. The feet are rounded to a hundredth of a foot before the split, so you never see 3 feet next to a whole yard. Starting from another unit works the same way: inches divide by 36, meters divide by 0.9144, and miles multiply by 1,760 yards.

Feet and yards measure length only. For floor space, divide square feet by 9 to get square yards; for gravel, soil or concrete, divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards. The square footage calculator finds the area of a room first. For longer distances see the feet to miles converter, for heights and metric lengths the cm to feet converter, and for small measurements the cm to inches converter.

The formula

Every factor is exact by definition, so only the digits shown are rounded: yards, feet and meters appear with up to 4 decimals, inches and the leftover feet with 2, and miles with 6. A mile is 5,280 feet by definition, which makes it 1,760 yards and 1,609.344 meters. The yards-and-feet split rounds the feet to 0.01 first, then takes out whole yards of 3 feet each.

Land surveys in the United States long used the US survey foot, 1200/3937 meter, which is 2 parts per million longer than the international foot of 0.3048 meter. NIST has treated it as obsolete since January 1, 2023, so this converter uses the international foot and yard everywhere. Over 100 feet the two differ by about 0.0024 inch.

Example

How many yards is 100 feet?

  1. A yard is 3 feet, so divide by 3: 100 / 3 = 33.3333 yd.
  2. Whole yards: 33 × 3 = 99 ft, which leaves 1 ft. So 100 ft is 33 yd 1 ft.
  3. In meters, multiply by 0.3048: 100 × 0.3048 = 30.48 m.

100 ft = 33.3333 yd, or 1,200 in and 30.48 m.

Frequently asked questions

How many feet are in a yard?

There are exactly 3 feet in 1 yard, which is also 36 inches or 0.9144 meters. So 6 feet is 2 yards, 9 feet is 3 yards, 12 feet is 4 yards and 30 feet is 10 yards. To check any length, divide the feet by 3.

Is 1 yard exactly 3 feet?

Yes. Since 1959 the yard has been exactly 0.9144 meters and the foot exactly 0.3048 meters, and 3 × 0.3048 = 0.9144, so 3 feet equal 1 yard with no rounding. Older land surveys used the US survey foot, which is 2 parts per million longer, but NIST has treated it as obsolete since January 1, 2023.

Does 12 feet equal 1 yard?

No. A yard is 3 feet, so 12 feet is 4 yards. The 12 you may be thinking of is inches: 12 inches make 1 foot, and 36 inches make 1 yard. To go from inches to yards, divide by 36.

How do I convert feet to yards?

Divide the feet by 3. 15 feet is 15 / 3 = 5 yards, 100 feet is 33.33 yards and 1 foot is 0.3333 yard. For a mixed answer, keep the leftover feet: 100 feet is 33 yards 1 foot, because 33 × 3 = 99. The converter above shows both forms.

How do I convert yards to feet?

Multiply the yards by 3. 5 yards is 15 feet, 25 yards is 75 feet and 100 yards is 300 feet. Choose “Yards” above to see the answer in feet, inches, meters and miles. It is simply the reverse of dividing feet by 3.

How many yards is 12 feet, 100 feet or 1,000 feet?

12 feet is exactly 4 yards. 100 feet is 33.33 yards (33 yards 1 foot), and 1,000 feet is 333.33 yards (333 yards 1 foot). Shorter lengths: 4 feet is 1.33 yards, 5 feet is 1.67 yards and 6 feet is exactly 2 yards.

How many yards are in a mile?

There are 1,760 yards in a mile, because a mile is 5,280 feet and 5,280 / 3 = 1,760. Half a mile is 880 yards and a quarter mile is 440 yards. Choose “Miles” above and enter 1 to see it, or open the feet to miles converter.

How many inches or meters are in a yard?

A yard is 36 inches and exactly 0.9144 meters. A meter is therefore a little longer than a yard: 1 meter is 1.0936 yards, or 39.37 inches. To turn meters into yards, divide by 0.9144; to go the other way, multiply by 0.9144.

How do I convert square feet or cubic feet to yards?

Areas and volumes use the factor squared or cubed. A square yard is 9 square feet (3 × 3), so divide square feet by 9: 450 sq ft is 50 sq yd. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet (3 × 3 × 3), so divide cubic feet by 27: 81 cu ft is 3 cu yd. For a room, start with the square footage calculator.

What is the difference between the international foot and the US survey foot?

The international foot is exactly 0.3048 meter. The US survey foot, 1200/3937 meter, is 2 parts per million longer, about 0.0024 inch over 100 feet. It served land surveys until January 1, 2023, when NIST deemed it obsolete and superseded by the international foot. Everyday measures, and this converter, use the international foot.
