Result: In miles

1mile

5,280 ft = 1 mile, or 1,760 yd and 1,609.344 m.

  • In yards: 1,760 yd
  • In meters: 1,609.344 m
  • In kilometers: 1.609344 km

Step by step

5,280 / 5,280 = 1

  1. A mile is 5,280 feet, so divide the feet by 5,280: 5,280 / 5,280 = 1 mi.
  2. In yards, divide by 3: 5,280 / 3 = 1,760 yd.
  3. In meters, multiply by 0.3048: 5,280 × 0.3048 = 1,609.344 m, which is 1.609344 km.

Formula

miles = feet / 5,280
1 mi = 5,280 ft = 1,760 yd = 1,609.344 m

How it works

A mile is exactly 5,280 feet, so to convert feet to miles you divide by 5,280, and to convert miles to feet you multiply by 5,280. 10,560 feet is 10,560 ÷ 5,280 = 2 miles, and 3 miles is 3 × 5,280 = 15,840 feet. The figure is exact, not rounded: a mile is 1,760 yards of 3 feet each, and since 1959 the foot has been exactly 0.3048 meter, which makes a mile exactly 1,609.344 meters, or 1.609344 kilometers.

Fractions of a mile are handy to know in feet: a quarter mile is 1,320 feet, half a mile is 2,640 feet, three quarters is 3,960 feet and an eighth of a mile, a furlong, is 660 feet. Starting from another unit works the same way. Yards divide by 1,760, meters divide by 1,609.344 and kilometers divide by 1.609344. The converter works in feet first, so every result is exact to the digits shown: up to 6 decimals for miles and kilometers and 4 for feet, yards and meters.

This page uses the international mile of 5,280 international feet. The older US survey mile counts 5,280 survey feet and is about 3 millimeters longer; NIST has treated the survey foot as obsolete since January 1, 2023 (see the questions below). For kilometers and miles on their own, use the km to miles converter; for yards, the feet to yards converter; for heights in feet and inches, the cm to feet converter.

The formula

Every factor is exact by definition: the mile is 5,280 feet, and with the foot at exactly 0.3048 meter, 5,280 × 0.3048 = 1,609.344 meters. Only the digits shown are rounded, so a distance that is not a whole number of miles, such as 10,000 feet, shows as 1.893939 miles rather than as a fraction.

The nautical mile used at sea and in the air is a different unit: exactly 1,852 meters, or about 6,076.115 feet, which is about 1.1508 of the miles above. This converter covers the mile of 5,280 feet only.

Example

How many miles is 10,000 feet?

  1. A mile is 5,280 feet, so divide by 5,280: 10,000 / 5,280 = 1.893939 mi.
  2. That is 1 whole mile and 4,720 feet, because 10,000 minus 5,280 is 4,720.
  3. In kilometers, multiply the feet by 0.3048 to get meters and divide by 1,000: 3.048 km.

10,000 ft = 1.893939 miles, or 3,333.3333 yd and 3,048 m.

Frequently asked questions

How many feet are in a mile?

There are exactly 5,280 feet in a mile, which is also 1,760 yards, 63,360 inches, 1,609.344 meters or 1.609344 kilometers. A quarter mile is 1,320 feet, half a mile is 2,640 feet and three quarters of a mile is 3,960 feet.

Is 2000 feet one mile?

No. 2,000 feet is only 0.3788 mile, a little over a third of a mile. You need another 3,280 feet to reach a full mile. For comparison, 2,640 feet is half a mile and 5,000 feet is 0.947 mile.

How can I remember 5,280 feet in a mile?

Build it from smaller pieces you already know. A mile is 8 furlongs and a furlong is 660 feet, so 8 × 660 = 5,280. Or use yards: a mile is 1,760 yards and a yard is 3 feet, so 1,760 × 3 = 5,280. The quarter-mile marks help too: 1,320, 2,640, 3,960 and 5,280, each 1,320 feet apart.

Why are there 5,280 feet in a mile?

It comes from English law. The Roman mile was 1,000 paces, or 5,000 Roman feet. In 1593 an act of Parliament set a mile at 8 furlongs, a furlong at 40 poles and a pole at 16 and a half feet, and 8 × 40 × 16.5 = 5,280. The furlong mattered more in England than the 5,000-foot Roman count, so Parliament kept 8 furlongs and let the feet per mile rise.

How long was a Roman mile?

A Roman mile was 1,000 paces of two steps each, or 5,000 Roman feet, and measured roughly 1.48 kilometers, about 4,850 feet. That is a bit shorter than today’s mile of 5,280 feet. The word “mile” itself comes from the Latin mille passus, “a thousand paces”.

What are feet and miles?

Feet and miles are US customary units of length. A foot is 12 inches, exactly 0.3048 meter. A mile is 5,280 feet, exactly 1,609.344 meters, and it is the unit for road distances in the United States.

How do I convert feet to miles?

Divide the feet by 5,280. 2,640 feet is 2,640 / 5,280 = 0.5 mile, 10,000 feet is 1.8939 miles and 26,400 feet is exactly 5 miles. The converter above does the division and also shows yards, meters and kilometers.

How many miles are in 1 foot?

One foot is 1/5,280 of a mile, which is 0.000189394 mile (about 0.00019). So 100 feet is 0.0189 mile and 1,000 feet is 0.1894 mile. Enter 1 under “Feet” above to see the full value.

How many feet are in 2, 5 or 10 miles?

2 miles are 10,560 feet, 5 miles are 26,400 feet and 10 miles are 52,800 feet. Each extra mile adds 5,280 feet. To work backward, divide the feet by 5,280.

How many feet are in a nautical mile?

A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 meters, or about 6,076.115 feet, so 1 nautical mile to feet is 6,076.115. That is about 1.1508 miles of 5,280 feet, roughly 15 percent longer. The value of 1,852 meters was adopted by an international hydrographic conference in 1929.

Did the number of feet in a mile ever change?

The mile has been 5,280 feet in English law since 1593. What changed is the length of the foot. Since 1959 the international foot is exactly 0.3048 meter, but US land surveys kept the survey foot of 1200/3937 meter, 2 parts per million longer. A survey mile is therefore 1,609.347 meters, about 3 millimeters longer than the international mile of 1,609.344 meters. NIST has treated the survey foot as obsolete since January 1, 2023.
