CM to MM Converter

Conversions

Pick cm to mm or mm to cm and type the length. The converter multiplies or divides by 10, shows the same length in meters, and lists the most common sizes in two charts below the calculator.

Convert

For example 2.54 cm (one inch) or 29.7 cm (the long side of an A4 sheet).

Use a period for decimals, like 12.5. Commas for thousands are fine. The result updates as you type.Decimals with a period, like 12.5

Step by step

1 cm × 10 = 10 mm

  1. One centimeter is 10 millimeters, so multiply by 10: 1 × 10 = 10 mm.
  2. In meters, divide the centimeters by 100: 1 / 100 = 0.01 m.

Formula

mm = cm × 10
m = cm / 100 = mm / 1,000
cm
length in centimeters, one hundredth of a meter
mm
length in millimeters, one thousandth of a meter
m
length in meters, the SI base unit of length

How it works

The centimeter (cm) and the millimeter (mm) are both fractions of a meter. "Centi" stands for one hundredth and "milli" for one thousandth, so 1 cm = 0.01 m and 1 mm = 0.001 m. Divide the first by the second and you get the factor: 1 cm = 10 mm and 1 mm = 0.1 cm. The ratio is exact because it comes from the definition of the metric prefixes, not from a rounded constant. To go from centimeters to millimeters, multiply by 10, which moves the decimal point one place to the right: 2.5 cm is 25 mm. To go from millimeters to centimeters, divide by 10 and move the point one place to the left: 47 mm is 4.7 cm.

The converter also shows the length in meters (cm / 100 or mm / 1,000), because many specs mix the three units. In the US, everyday sizes are mostly given in inches or inch-based gauges, such as a 1/4 inch bolt, a #8 screw or a 32 inch waist. Millimeters turn up in metric specs, for example camera lenses, 3D printing, gemstones, watch cases and metric hardware, and centimeters in metric measurements of the body, furniture and sewing patterns. The US customary inch fits neatly: 1 inch is exactly 25.4 mm, which is 2.54 cm, so a 6.35 cm part is 63.5 mm or 2.5 inches. For inches, use the cm to inches converter; for a height in feet and inches, use the cm to feet and inches converter.

Everyday examples help to check an answer. An international A4 sheet is 21 cm by 29.7 cm, which is 210 mm by 297 mm. A US Letter sheet is 8.5 by 11 inches, which is 21.59 cm by 27.94 cm, or 215.9 mm by 279.4 mm. These factors apply to lengths only. Areas and volumes change by the square or cube of the factor: 1 cm² is 100 mm² and 1 cm³ is 1,000 mm³, so do not divide those by 10.

The formula

The meter is the SI base unit of length, and the prefixes are powers of ten: centi is 10⁻² and milli is 10⁻³. The ratio of the two units is 10⁻² / 10⁻³ = 10. Because the factor is exact, the conversion needs no rounding. The converter keeps every digit and shows up to four decimals for millimeters and centimeters and five for meters.

Moving the decimal point one place is the same as multiplying or dividing by 10, so 0.5 cm is 5 mm. The symbols cm and mm are written in lowercase without a period, and they are the same in the singular and the plural.

Example

A US Letter sheet is 21.59 cm wide. How many millimeters is that?

  1. One centimeter is 10 millimeters: 21.59 × 10 = 215.9 mm.
  2. In meters: 21.59 / 100 = 0.2159 m.
  3. That matches the 8.5 inch width of the sheet, because 8.5 inches × 25.4 mm per inch is 215.9 mm.

21.59 cm = 215.9 mm, which is 0.2159 m.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert cm into mm?

Multiply the centimeters by 10, because 1 cm is 10 mm. The decimal point moves one place to the right: 3.7 cm is 37 mm, 12 cm is 120 mm and 0.5 cm is 5 mm. In the converter, choose "cm → mm" and enter the length.

How many centimeters are in 25 millimeters?

25 mm is 2.5 cm. Divide the millimeters by 10, which moves the decimal point one place to the left. In the same way 50 mm is 5 cm, 6 mm is 0.6 cm and 100 mm is 10 cm.

How many mm equal 30 cm?

30 cm equal 300 mm, because 30 × 10 = 300. That is also 0.3 m. A common 12 inch ruler is about 30.5 cm long, which is 304.8 mm.

How many centimeters are in 3500 mm?

3500 mm is 350 cm, since 3500 / 10 = 350. In meters that is 3.5 m. Dividing by 10 is a handy check for a long measurement that a spec sheet gives in millimeters.

How many mm are in 100 cm?

100 cm are 1,000 mm. That is exactly 1 meter, because a meter is 100 centimeters or 1,000 millimeters. Multiply by 10 again for 200 cm = 2,000 mm.

How much is 86.36 cm in millimeters?

86.36 cm is 863.6 mm: 86.36 × 10 = 863.6. As a US customary length that is 34 inches, since 34 × 2.54 = 86.36 cm. The converter shows the same length in meters too, 0.8636 m.

What is the abbreviation for centimeter?

The symbol is cm, in lowercase and without a period. The same symbol is used for one centimeter and for many, so write 1 cm and 5 cm. A millimeter is mm. The US customary abbreviation for the inch is in, and 1 in is exactly 2.54 cm.

How do you add cm to mm?

Turn both lengths into the same unit before you add them. For 7 cm plus 4 mm, change 7 cm to 70 mm and add 4 mm to get 74 mm, which is 7.4 cm. Or change the 4 mm to 0.4 cm and add 7 cm.

What is 7.6 cm plus 4mm?

7.6 cm is 76 mm, and adding 4mm gives 80 mm. In centimeters the sum is 7.6 + 0.4 = 8.0 cm, or 0.08 m. Always convert before you add, because 7.6 + 4 = 11.6 mixes two different units.

How many millimeters are in an inch?

One inch is exactly 25.4 mm, which is 2.54 cm. So 2.54 cm are 25.4 mm, 6.35 cm are 63.5 mm (2.5 inches) and 50 mm are about 1.97 inches. The inch has been defined this way since 1959, in the United States and elsewhere.

How do I convert mm to cm and cm to mm without a calculator?

Move the decimal point one place. For cm to mm it moves right (5.8 cm becomes 58 mm), and for mm to cm it moves left (58 mm becomes 5.8 cm). Add a zero when you run out of digits: 7 mm is 0.7 cm.

Why do labels and specs use millimeters instead of centimeters?

Millimeters avoid decimals for small parts. A metric drill bit of 6.5 mm is easier to read than 0.65 cm, and tolerances on machine parts are given in tenths or hundredths of a millimeter. In metric countries and metric specs, lengths of people and furniture, which are larger, are usually given in centimeters. US labels for these mostly use inches.
