Cups in a Quart: Cups to Quarts Converter
ConversionsEnter quarts to see cups, or switch to cups to see quarts. One US quart is 4 cups, and the result also shows pints, fluid ounces, gallons and milliliters, a fraction for cups to quarts, and two charts below.
Step by step
1 × 4 = 4
- A US liquid quart holds 4 cups (a quart is 2 pints and a pint is 2 cups), so to get cups, multiply the quarts by 4: 1 × 4 = 4.
- Pints: 1 × 2 = 2. Fluid ounces: 1 × 32 = 32. Gallons: 1 / 4 = 0.25.
- Milliliters: a quart is 946.352946 mL, so 1 × 946.352946 = 946.4.

How it works
There are 4 cups in a US quart. A quart is a quarter of a gallon and a gallon holds 16 cups, so each quart holds 4. You can also build it from the bottom: a cup is half a pint and a quart is two pints. To change quarts to cups, multiply by 4: 2 quarts are 8 cups and 3 1/2 quarts are 14 cups. To change cups to quarts, divide by 4: 6 cups are 1.5 quarts and a single cup is 0.25 quart. The answer is the same for water, milk, broth, oil or juice, because a quart measures volume, not weight.
Not every quart is the same size. The quart in recipes and on milk cartons is the US liquid quart, 946.35 mL or 57.75 cubic inches. The US also has a dry quart for berries and other produce, a thirty-second of a bushel, which is 1,101.22 mL or about 4.65 cups. The imperial quart of the UK is 1,136.52 mL, about 4.80 US cups. This converter uses the US liquid quart and the US cup of 8 fluid ounces, the units US recipes are written in. For other units, see the ounces in a quart converter, the quarts in a gallon converter and the cups to ounces converter.
Below the converter, one chart lists quarts from 1/4 to 12 with the cups, pints, fluid ounces and liters they hold, and a second chart turns 1 to 24 cups into quarts, so you can read 9 cups as 2 1/4 quarts without typing anything.
The formula
The 4 follows from the definitions: a cup is 8 fluid ounces, a quart is 32 fluid ounces, and 32 / 8 = 4. The metric sizes come from the gallon, which is defined as 231 cubic inches. An inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so a cubic inch is 16.387064 mL, a gallon is 3,785.411784 mL, a quart is 946.352946 mL and a cup is 236.5882365 mL. All digits are kept during the calculation and trimmed only for display.
Pints are quarts × 2, fluid ounces are quarts × 32 and gallons are quarts / 4. The fraction shown for cups to quarts is exact for the number of cups you typed, taken to three decimals, so 2.5 cups give 5/8 of a quart and 10 cups give 2 1/2 quarts.
Example
A big pot of chili needs 10 cups of broth. How many quarts is that?
- A quart holds 4 cups, so divide: 10 / 4 = 2.5 quarts.
- As a mixed number that is 2 1/2 quarts, which is 2 quarts and 2 cups, or 5 pints.
10 cups = 2.5 quarts (2 1/2), or 2,365.9 mL.

How many cups are in a quart?
There are 4 cups in a US liquid quart. Two quarts are 8 cups, three quarts are 12 cups and four quarts are 16 cups, which is a gallon. Half a quart is 2 cups and a quarter of a quart is 1 cup.
How many cups are in a qt?
The same 4. Qt is the usual abbreviation for quart on recipes, cartons and measuring cups, so 1 qt is 4 cups, 2 pints or 32 fluid ounces. A 2 qt pitcher holds 8 cups.
How many quarts are in a cup?
A cup is a quarter of a quart, so 1 cup is 0.25 quart. Two cups are 0.5 quart, three cups are 0.75 quart, and four cups make exactly 1 quart. To convert any number of cups to quarts, divide by 4.
What is the difference between a pint and a quart?
A quart is twice a pint. A pint holds 2 cups or 16 fluid ounces (473.18 mL), while a quart holds 4 cups or 32 fluid ounces (946.35 mL). So 2 pints make 1 quart, and a pint is half a quart. A quart is a quarter of a gallon and a pint an eighth.
Is a liquid quart the same as a dry quart?
No. The US dry quart, used for berries and other produce, is a thirty-second of a bushel and holds 1.101 liters, about 16% more than the liquid quart of 0.946 liter. In cups that is about 4.65, not 4. For a recipe that lists a quart of liquid, use 4 cups.
How many quarts is 6 cups?
6 cups are 1.5 quarts, written 1 1/2 quarts, which is 1 quart and 2 cups. Divide any number of cups by 4: 10 cups are 2.5 quarts, 12 cups are 3 quarts and 9 cups are 2 1/4 quarts.
How many cups are in a quart of water?
A quart of water is 4 cups, the same as a quart of milk, broth, oil or any other liquid, because the unit measures volume. Only the weight differs from one liquid to the next. A quart is also 32 fluid ounces or 946 mL.
How many cups are in a half gallon?
A half gallon is 2 quarts, so it holds 8 cups. A full gallon is 4 quarts or 16 cups. Four cups make a quart, not a half gallon. The cups in a gallon converter shows more amounts.
Do other kinds of cups change the number of cups in a quart?
Slightly. A US cup is 236.59 mL, so a quart is exactly 4 cups. US nutrition labels use a 240 mL cup, which makes a quart 3.94 label cups, and the 250 mL metric cup of Canada, Australia and New Zealand makes it 3.79 metric cups. A UK imperial quart is about 4.80 US cups.
How many ounces are in a quart?
A US quart is 32 fluid ounces, so a cup is 8 fluid ounces and a pint is 16. Fluid ounces measure volume, while an ounce on a kitchen scale measures weight. The ounces in a quart converter turns fluid ounces into quarts and back.
