Ounces in a Quart: Ounces to Quarts Converter
ConversionsTurn quarts into fluid ounces or fluid ounces into quarts in one step. A US quart holds 32 fluid ounces; you also get cups, pints, gallons and milliliters, a fraction for ounces to quarts, and two charts below.
Step by step
1 × 32 = 32
- A US quart is 32 fluid ounces (2 pints of 16), so to get fluid ounces, multiply the quarts by 32: 1 × 32 = 32.
- Cups: 1 × 4 = 4. Pints: 1 × 2 = 2. Gallons: 1 / 4 = 0.25.
- Milliliters: a quart is 946.352946 mL, so 1 × 946.352946 = 946.4.

How it works
A US quart is 32 fluid ounces. A fluid ounce is a measure of volume, and a quart is a quarter of a gallon, which holds 128 fluid ounces, so 128 / 4 = 32. To change quarts to ounces, multiply by 32: 2 quarts are 64 fl oz and 1 1/2 quarts are 48 fl oz. To change ounces to quarts, divide by 32: 16 fl oz are half a quart, 8 fl oz are a quarter, and 1 fl oz is 1/32 of a quart, or 0.03125.
The word ounce names two different units. The fluid ounce measures volume and is the one this converter uses. The ounce on a kitchen scale measures weight: 16 of them make a pound, and one is about 28.35 grams. A fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 ounces, so a quart of water, which is 32 fluid ounces, weighs about 33.4 ounces or 2.09 pounds. Other liquids and dry foods weigh more or less per fluid ounce, so a weight in ounces cannot be turned into quarts without knowing the ingredient.
Quarts also come in other sizes. A US dry quart, used for berries and other produce, is 1.101 liters and holds 37.24 US fluid ounces, because it is 16% larger than the liquid quart. A UK imperial quart holds 40 imperial fluid ounces, which is 38.43 US fluid ounces, because an imperial fluid ounce is only 28.41 mL. For cups, pints and gallons, see the cups in a quart converter, the quarts in a gallon converter and the ounces in a gallon converter.
The formula
The 32 comes from the definitions of the US customary system: a pint is 16 fluid ounces and a quart is 2 pints. The metric sizes follow from the exact inch. A gallon of 231 cubic inches at 16.387064 mL each is 3,785.411784 mL, so a fluid ounce, one 128th of it, is exactly 29.5735295625 mL, and a quart of 32 of them is 946.352946 mL. Rounding happens only when a result is shown.
Cups are fluid ounces / 8, pints are fluid ounces / 16 and gallons are fluid ounces / 128. The quart fraction for ounces uses the amount exactly as typed, up to three decimals, so 12 fl oz give 3/8 of a quart and 20 fl oz give 5/8.
Example
A juice bottle is labeled 40 fl oz. How many quarts is that?
- A quart is 32 fluid ounces, so divide: 40 / 32 = 1.25 quarts.
- As a mixed number that is 1 1/4 quarts, which is 1 quart plus 8 fluid ounces, or 5 cups.
40 fluid ounces = 1.25 quarts (1 1/4), or 1,182.9 mL.

How many ounces make a quart?
A US quart holds 32 fluid ounces. Two quarts hold 64, three hold 96 and four hold 128, which is a gallon. Half a quart is 16 fluid ounces and a quarter of a quart is 8.
Is 32 oz 1 quart?
Yes. When the ounces are fluid ounces, 32 oz is exactly 1 quart, which is also 4 cups or 2 pints. A 32 oz bottle or carton of a drink holds one quart. Check that the label says fl oz, because an ounce of weight is a different unit.
Is 1 quart the same as 16 oz?
No. 16 fluid ounces are a pint, which is half a quart. A quart is 32 fluid ounces, so 1 quart is 2 pints or two 16 oz bottles, and 16 oz is 0.5 quart.
Does 64 oz equal 1 quart?
No. 64 fluid ounces are 2 quarts, which is a half gallon or 8 cups. One quart is 32 fluid ounces, so 64 oz is double a quart.
How many 8 oz cups are in a quart?
A quart holds four 8 oz cups, because 32 / 8 = 4. Two quarts fill 8 cups and a gallon fills 16.
How many 8 ounce glasses are in a quart?
Four 8 ounce glasses, if each glass is filled with 8 fluid ounces: 32 / 8 = 4. A 12 ounce glass is filled 2 2/3 times by a quart, and a 16 ounce glass twice.
How many oz in 2 quarts?
2 quarts are 64 fluid ounces. Three quarts are 96 fl oz and 4 quarts are 128 fl oz. For any amount, multiply the quarts by 32.
How much is 2 oz in quarts?
2 fluid ounces are 2 / 32 = 1/16 of a quart, or 0.0625 quart. Divide any number of fluid ounces by 32 to get quarts: 8 oz are 0.25 quart and 24 oz are 0.75 quart.
How many quarts are in an ounce?
One fluid ounce is 1/32 of a quart, which is 0.03125 quart. It is also 2 tablespoons, or about 29.57 mL. A full quart needs 32 of them.
What is an ounce?
An ounce is either a unit of weight or a fluid ounce, a unit of volume. The weight ounce is 1/16 pound, about 28.35 grams, and the US fluid ounce is 1/128 gallon, about 29.57 mL. A quart is a volume, so this converter uses fluid ounces.
How many dry ounces are in a quart?
There is no separate dry ounce of volume. A US dry quart, the size used for berries and other produce, holds 37.24 US fluid ounces because it is 1.101 liters. What a dry quart weighs in ounces depends on the ingredient, so weigh it on a scale.
Is a quart the same in the UK?
Not quite. A UK imperial quart holds 40 imperial fluid ounces, but an imperial fluid ounce is 28.41 mL, so the imperial quart is 1,136.52 mL, about 38.43 US fluid ounces. A US quart holds 32 US fluid ounces (946.35 mL), about 33.3 imperial fluid ounces.
How many quarts is a 12 oz can or a 16.9 oz bottle?
12 fluid ounces are 3/8 of a quart, or 0.375. A 500 mL bottle holds 16.9 fluid ounces, which is 0.528 quart, a little more than half a quart. Two 16 oz bottles make a quart.
How much does a quart of water weigh in ounces?
A quart of water weighs about 33.4 ounces, or 2.09 pounds. A fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 ounces, so 32 fluid ounces weigh a little more than 32 ounces on a scale. Other liquids weigh more or less.
