Ounces in a Pint: Ounces to Pints Converter
ConversionsTurn pints into fluid ounces or fluid ounces into pints in one step. A US pint holds 16 fluid ounces. You also get cups, quarts, gallons and milliliters, a second set of rows for the imperial (UK) pint of 20 ounces, and two charts.
Step by step
1 × 16 = 16
- A US pint holds 16 fluid ounces (2 cups of 8), so to get fluid ounces, multiply the pints by 16: 1 × 16 = 16.
- Cups: 1 × 2 = 2. Quarts: 1 / 2 = 0.5. Gallons: 1 / 8 = 0.125.
- Milliliters: a pint is 473.176473 mL, so 1 × 473.176473 = 473.18 mL.
- If these were imperial pints of 20 imperial fluid ounces each: 1 × 20 = 20 imperial fluid ounces, or 568.26 mL.
Once every entry is valid, you’ll see each step of the calculation here.

How it works
A US pint is 16 fluid ounces. A fluid ounce is a measure of volume, and a pint is an eighth of a gallon, which holds 128 fluid ounces, so 128 / 8 = 16. To change pints to ounces, multiply by 16: 2 pints are 32 fl oz and 1 1/2 pints are 24 fl oz. To change ounces to pints, divide by 16: 8 fl oz are half a pint, 4 fl oz are a quarter, and 1 fl oz is 1/16 of a pint, or 0.0625. A pint is also 2 cups and half a quart.
Pints come in three common sizes, so check which one a label or recipe means. The US liquid pint used for milk, cream and drinks is 473.18 mL, or 16 US fluid ounces. The US dry pint used for berries and cherry tomatoes is 550.61 mL, about 18.6 US fluid ounces. The imperial pint of the UK and Ireland is 568.26 mL and holds 20 imperial fluid ounces. An imperial fluid ounce is a little smaller than a US one (28.41 mL against 29.57 mL), so the imperial pint is about 19.2 US fluid ounces and roughly 20% larger than a US pint. The rows marked imperial under the result apply the imperial sizes to the number you typed.
The ounce in this converter is the fluid ounce, a volume. The ounce on a kitchen scale is a unit of weight, about 28.35 grams, so the two are different units. A pint of water weighs about 16.7 ounces on a scale, close to 16 but not the same, and other liquids differ more. For the neighboring sizes, see the ounces in a quart converter, the ounces in a gallon converter and the cups in a pint converter, and for milliliters the mL to oz converter.
The formula
The 16 comes from the definitions of the US customary system. A gallon is 231 cubic inches, and an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so a gallon is 3,785.411784 mL. A fluid ounce, one 128th of it, is exactly 29.5735295625 mL, and a pint of 16 of them is 473.176473 mL. Cups are fluid ounces / 8, quarts are fluid ounces / 32 and gallons are fluid ounces / 128. The fraction of a pint uses the ounces exactly as typed, up to three decimals.
The imperial rows use the UK definitions. The imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters, a pint is an eighth of it, 568.26125 mL, and a fluid ounce is a twentieth of a pint, 28.4130625 mL. So 568.26125 / 29.5735295625 = 19.2152 US fluid ounces in an imperial pint. With pints typed, the rows read the number as imperial pints. With ounces typed, they read it as imperial fluid ounces.
Example
A cold brew bottle is labeled 24 fl oz. How many pints is that?
- A pint is 16 fluid ounces, so divide: 24 / 16 = 1.5 pints.
- As a mixed number that is 1 1/2 pints, which is 3 cups, 0.75 of a quart or 709.76 mL.
- Read as imperial fluid ounces, the same 24 would be 1.2 imperial pints.
24 fluid ounces = 1.5 pints (1 1/2), or 709.76 mL.

How many ounces are in a pint?
A US pint holds 16 fluid ounces. Half a pint is 8, a quarter pint is 4, two pints are 32 (a quart) and eight pints are 128 (a gallon). An imperial pint, used in the UK, holds 20 imperial fluid ounces, which is about 19.2 US fluid ounces.
Is a pint the same as 8 oz?
No. A US pint is 16 fluid ounces, so 8 fl oz is half a pint, which is one cup. If a recipe asks for a pint of milk, measure 2 cups. The two are easy to mix up because both are common sizes for drinks and cream.
How many ounces is a pint in Ireland?
Ireland, like the UK, uses the imperial pint of 568 mL. It holds 20 imperial fluid ounces, which is about 19.2 US fluid ounces, so an Irish pint is roughly 3 US ounces more than an American one. The imperial rows of this converter show the numbers.
How many mL are in a pint?
A US liquid pint is 473.18 mL, a US dry pint is 550.61 mL and an imperial pint is 568.26 mL. Recipes, milk and drink labels in the US use the liquid pint. Multiply a number of pints by 473.176473 to get milliliters, or read the result under the converter.
How do I convert ounces to milliliters?
Multiply the US fluid ounces by 29.5735, the exact figure being 29.5735295625 mL per fluid ounce. So 16 fl oz is 473.18 mL and 8 fl oz is 236.59 mL. A rough mental estimate is 30 mL per ounce. An imperial fluid ounce is slightly smaller, 28.41 mL.
What is a pint?
A pint is a unit of volume. The US liquid pint is one eighth of a US gallon, which makes it 16 fluid ounces, 2 cups or half a quart. Other pints exist: the US dry pint, used for produce, and the larger imperial pint, one eighth of an imperial gallon.
What is a fluid ounce?
A fluid ounce is a unit of volume. The US fluid ounce is 1/128 of a gallon, or 29.5735 mL. It is not the ounce on a kitchen scale, which measures weight and is about 28.35 grams. A fluid ounce of water weighs a little more than one ounce.
Does a pint of water weigh 16 ounces?
No, it weighs about 16.7 ounces. A US pint of water is 473 mL and weighs roughly 473 grams, which is about 16.7 ounces on a scale. The numbers are close because a fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 ounces. Other liquids weigh more or less per pint.
How many ounces are in a dry pint of blueberries?
A US dry pint is a volume of 550.61 mL, which equals about 18.6 US fluid ounces. How much the berries weigh depends on their size and how they pack, so there is no fixed number of ounces by weight. Check the weight printed on the container.
Is a UK pint bigger than a US pint?
Yes, by about 20%. An imperial pint is 568.26 mL and a US liquid pint is 473.18 mL, a difference of about 95 mL. The imperial pint holds 20 imperial fluid ounces against 16 US ones, even though each imperial ounce is a bit smaller.
How many ounces are in half a pint or a pint of beer?
Half a US pint is 8 fluid ounces. A US pint of beer is 16 fluid ounces. A British pint of beer is 20 imperial fluid ounces, or 568 mL. A bar may use a glass of another size, so the menu or the line marked on the glass tells you the real amount.
How many pints are in a quart and in a gallon?
A US quart is 2 pints and a US gallon is 8 pints, so a quart is 32 fluid ounces and a gallon is 128. See the ounces in a quart converter and the ounces in a gallon converter for those sizes.
How many pints are in an ounce?
A fluid ounce is 1/16 of a pint, which is 0.0625 pint. So 4 fluid ounces are a quarter pint and 12 fluid ounces are three quarters of a pint. Pick "fl oz → pints" in the converter and it also shows the fraction.
How many cups are in a pint?
A US pint holds 2 cups, because a cup is 8 fluid ounces and a pint is 16. Four cups make a quart and 16 cups make a gallon. The cups in a pint converter goes into more detail.
