Fahrenheit to Celsius Converter
ConversionsChoose a direction and enter the temperature. The converter shows the result in Celsius or Fahrenheit and in Kelvin. The chart below lists common temperatures from weather and fever to oven settings.
Step by step
(350 - 32) × 5 / 9 = 176.67 °C
- Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit value, then multiply by 5/9: (350 - 32) × 5 / 9 = 176.67 °C.
- In kelvins: 176.67 + 273.15 = 449.82 K.

How it works
The two scales differ in their zero point and in the size of a degree. Water freezes at 32 °F or 0 °C and boils at 212 °F or 100 °C at sea level, so 180 Fahrenheit degrees span the same range as 100 Celsius degrees. One Celsius degree is therefore 9/5 = 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees.
To go from Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9: 350 °F is (350 - 32) × 5 / 9 = 176.7 °C, the classic baking temperature. From Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 and add 32: 20 °C is 20 × 1.8 + 32 = 68 °F. The two scales meet at -40, where -40 °F equals -40 °C.
The converter also gives Kelvin, the SI unit scientists use: kelvins = degrees Celsius + 273.15, so 0 K is absolute zero, -273.15 °C or -459.67 °F. A quick mental estimate for weather is “double the Celsius and add 30”: 15 °C gives about 60 °F (exactly 59 °F). The estimate drifts further off at high temperatures, so use the exact formula for cooking and fevers. For other everyday US conversions, see the cm to inches converter.
The formula
The formulas follow from the two fixed points: 32 °F = 0 °C and 212 °F = 100 °C. Subtracting 32 lines up the zero points, and the factor 5/9 (about 0.5556) scales the degree size. The Celsius scale itself is defined from the kelvin: °C = K - 273.15.
Normal body temperature, often given as 98.6 °F, is exactly 37 °C. A fever usually starts around 100.4 °F, which is 38 °C. Room temperature of 68 to 72 °F is 20 to 22.2 °C.
Example
A recipe says to bake at 350 °F. What is that in Celsius?
- Subtract 32: 350 - 32 = 318.
- Multiply by 5/9: 318 × 5 / 9 = 176.67 °C. Ovens set in Celsius usually use 175 or 180 °C for this.
350 °F is 176.67 °C.

Frequently asked questions
How do you convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32, then multiply by 5 and divide by 9. 100 °F: 100 - 32 = 68, and 68 × 5 / 9 = 37.8 °C. 50 °F is 10 °C, 77 °F is 25 °C and 86 °F is 30 °C.
How do you convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9/5 (or 1.8) and add 32. 30 °C: 30 × 1.8 = 54, plus 32 = 86 °F. 40 °C is 104 °F, 22 °C is 71.6 °F and 35 °C is 95 °F.
Is 98.6 °F a normal body temperature?
98.6 °F equals 37 °C and is the traditional average. Normal readings vary from person to person and over the day, roughly 97 to 99 °F. Many doctors treat 100.4 °F (38 °C) or higher as a fever.
At what temperature are Fahrenheit and Celsius the same?
At -40 degrees. Setting °F equal to °C in the formula gives x = x × 9 / 5 + 32, which solves to x = -40. Below that, Fahrenheit numbers are lower than Celsius numbers; above it, higher.
What are common oven temperatures in Celsius?
325 °F is 162.8 °C, 350 °F is 176.7 °C, 375 °F is 190.6 °C, 400 °F is 204.4 °C and 425 °F is 218.3 °C. Recipes usually round these to 160, 180, 190, 200 and 220 °C.
