Step by step

2:30 PM = 1430

  1. Hour on the 24-hour clock: 12 AM becomes 00, PM hours from 1 to 11 get 12 added, everything else stays. Result: 14:30.
  2. Drop the colon and keep four digits: 1430.

Formula

PM, hours 1 to 11: military hour = hour + 12
AM, 12 o’clock: military hour = 00
hour
the hour on the 12-hour clock, 1 to 12
military hour
the first two digits of military time, 00 to 23

How it works

Military time is the 24-hour clock written as four digits without a colon. The day starts at 0000 (midnight) and ends at 2359 (11:59 PM). Morning hours look almost the same as on a 12-hour clock: 9:45 AM is 0945, with a leading zero. From 1:00 PM on, the hours keep counting past 12, so 1:00 PM is 1300 and 2:30 PM is 1430.

To convert standard time to military time, keep AM hours as they are (add a leading zero below 10), but turn 12 AM into 00. For PM hours from 1 to 11, add 12: 7:15 PM becomes 1915. Noon stays 1200. To go back, subtract 12 from any hour of 13 or more and add PM; hours from 01 to 11 are AM, 12 is noon and 00 is the 12 AM hour after midnight.

The armed forces, hospitals, airlines, police and fire departments use military time because it cannot mix up morning and evening. In speech, 1430 is “fourteen thirty” and an even hour such as 0600 is “zero six hundred” or “oh six hundred”, often followed by “hours”. To add up a shift or the time between two clock times, use the time calculator.

The formula

Minutes never change between the two formats: 6:07 PM is 1807. Only the hour moves, and only in two cases: 12 AM becomes 00, and the PM hours from 1 to 11 become 13 to 23. Noon (12 PM) is 1200 on both clocks.

Military time has no 2400 in this converter. Some schedules write 2400 for midnight at the end of a day, but the next minute is 0001 of the following day, and 2400 and 0000 are the same moment. Seconds, when needed, follow as two more digits (143015).

Example

Your shift starts at 7:15 PM. What is that in military time?

  1. 7 PM is a PM hour from 1 to 11, so add 12: 7 + 12 = 19.
  2. The minutes stay 15, so the time is 19:15, written as 1915 (“nineteen fifteen”).

7:15 PM is 1915 in military time (19:15 on a 24-hour clock).

Frequently asked questions

What is 1700 in military time?

1700 is 5:00 PM. Subtract 12 from any military hour of 13 or more to get the PM hour: 17 - 12 = 5. Likewise 1500 is 3:00 PM, 1900 is 7:00 PM and 2300 is 11:00 PM.

How do you write midnight and noon in military time?

Midnight is 0000, the start of the day, so 12:30 AM is 0030. Noon is 1200, and 12:30 PM is 1230. Some schedules write 2400 for midnight at the end of a day, which is the same moment as 0000 of the next day.

How do you say military time out loud?

Read the hour and the minutes as two numbers: 1430 is “fourteen thirty”, 2115 is “twenty-one fifteen”. Full hours are hundreds: 0800 is “zero eight hundred” or “oh eight hundred”, 1300 is “thirteen hundred”. The word “hours” is often added.

Is military time the same as the 24-hour clock?

Yes, it is the same time of day. Military time just drops the colon and always uses four digits, so 08:30 on a 24-hour clock is 0830. Most of the world writes the 24-hour clock with a colon in everyday life.

What is 3 PM in military time?

3 PM is 1500: add 12 to the hour for PM times from 1 to 11. Other common ones: 6 PM is 1800, 8 PM is 2000, 10 PM is 2200 and 11:59 PM is 2359.
