Result: In weeks

52.142857weeks

1 year = 52.142857 weeks.

  • In seconds: 31,536,000 s
  • In minutes: 525,600 min
  • In hours: 8,760 hours
  • In days: 365 days
  • In months: 12 months
  • In years: 1 year

Step by step

1 × 31,536,000 / 604,800 = 52.142857

  1. Turn the amount into seconds: 1 × 31,536,000 = 31,536,000 seconds.
  2. Divide by the seconds in the unit you want: 31,536,000 / 604,800 = 52.142857.
  3. Years and months follow the year length you picked: a year counts as 365 days, so a month counts as 30.416667 days.

Formula

weeks = days / 7
seconds = amount × seconds in the unit you have
result = seconds / seconds in the unit you want

How it works

A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks and 1 day, or 52.1429 weeks. A leap year has 366 days, which is 52 weeks and 2 days, or 52.2857 weeks. Over the whole Gregorian calendar the average year is 365.2425 days, or 52.1775 weeks, because 97 of every 400 years are leap years. So the honest answer to how many weeks are in a calendar year is "52, plus a day or two". Those extra days are why a common year contains 53 of one weekday (the one it starts on) and a leap year 53 of two weekdays.

Every smaller unit has an exact size: a minute is 60 seconds, an hour 3,600 seconds, a day 86,400 seconds and a week 604,800 seconds, which is 168 hours. A common year therefore has 8,760 hours, 525,600 minutes and 31,536,000 seconds, and a leap year has 8,784 hours. The month is the only unit without a fixed length, because calendar months run from 28 to 31 days. For a conversion this page uses one twelfth of the year you pick: 30.4167 days (730 hours) in a common year and 30.4369 days (730.485 hours) on the Gregorian average.

The converter turns your amount into seconds first and divides by the seconds in the unit you want, so nothing is rounded along the way. Use the common year for everyday questions such as hours in a year, the 366-day year for a leap year and the average year for long periods like decades. To count the days between two real dates, use the days between dates calculator; to turn clock time into decimal hours for a time card, see the minutes to hours converter; to turn a yearly pay into an hourly rate, see the hourly wage calculator.

The formula

The Gregorian leap rule adds a day to every year divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400, so 2000 was a leap year and 2100 will not be. That gives 97 leap years in 400 years, 146,097 days, exactly 20,871 weeks, and an average year of 365.2425 days.

A 52-week period is 364 days, which is 1 day (2 in a leap year) shorter than a calendar year. That is why payroll and fiscal calendars that use 52-week years sometimes add a 53rd week to catch up with the calendar.

Example

How many weeks, days, hours and minutes are in a year?

  1. A common year has 365 days. Divide by the 7 days in a week: 365 / 7 = 52.142857 weeks, which is 52 weeks and 1 day.
  2. The same year is 365 days, 8,760 hours, 525,600 min or 31,536,000 s.

Frequently asked questions

How many weeks are in a year?

A common year has 52 weeks and 1 day (365 / 7 = 52.14 weeks) and a leap year has 52 weeks and 2 days (366 / 7 = 52.29 weeks). Calendars and schedules usually say 52 weeks. Averaged over the 400-year Gregorian cycle a year is 52.1775 weeks.

Is it 52 or 56 weeks in a year?

It is 52. A year of 365 days holds 52 full weeks and one day, so 56 weeks would be 392 days. Four-week months give 12 × 4 = 48, which falls short, and 13 four-week periods give 13 × 4 = 52, the pattern some fiscal calendars use.

Are there 52 weeks in every year?

Every year has 52 full weeks, plus 1 or 2 leftover days. The leftovers add up, so in the ISO week calendar a year has 53 weeks when January 1 is a Thursday, or a Wednesday in a leap year. That happens in 71 of every 400 years, about once every five or six years.

Why are there 53 weeks in 2026?

January 1, 2026 is a Thursday. ISO week 1 is the week with the year's first Thursday, so a year that starts on a Thursday and has 365 days has 53 Thursdays and 53 weeks. ISO week 53 of 2026 ends on January 3, 2027. The next 53-week years are 2032 and 2037.

Where does week 53 come from?

You may have heard of week 53 from the ISO 8601 week numbering, from payroll and retail calendars that use 52-week or 53-week fiscal years, or from a calendar app. It exists because 52 weeks are 364 days and a year is 365 or 366, so a 53rd week is added every five or six years to realign the calendar.

How many weeks are in a 12 month period?

Any 12 consecutive months cover 365 or 366 days, which is 52 weeks and 1 or 2 days. A 52-week period is 364 days, so it is 1 or 2 days shorter than 12 months.

How many days and hours are in a year?

A common year has 365 days and 8,760 hours, and a leap year has 366 days and 8,784 hours. The Gregorian average is 365.2425 days, or 8,765.82 hours. The converter starts with the common year of 365 days.

How many seconds are in a day and in an hour?

A day has 86,400 seconds (24 × 60 × 60) and an hour has 3,600 seconds (60 × 60). A week has 604,800 seconds.

How many hours are in a week?

A week has 168 hours (24 × 7). A 40-hour work week is about 23.8 percent of the 168 hours in the week.

How many days are in a month?

A month has 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. February has 28 days, or 29 in a leap year; April, June, September and November have 30; the other seven months have 31. The average month is 30.44 days.

How many hours are in a month?

A 28-day month has 672 hours, a 29-day month 696, a 30-day month 720 and a 31-day month 744. The average month has about 730.49 hours (365.2425 × 24 / 12).

How many months are in a year?

There are 12 months in a year. Converting months to years means dividing by 12, so 18 months are 1.5 years. Months have unequal lengths, so this page counts a month as one twelfth of the year.

How many weeks are in a month?

A month has about 4.35 weeks on average (52.1775 weeks divided by 12). Calendar months run from 28 to 31 days, so they hold 4 weeks to 4 weeks and 3 days: February has exactly 4 weeks in a common year and the 31-day months have 4 weeks and 3 days.

How many weekdays and working days are in a year?

A common year has 260 or 261 weekdays (Monday to Friday) and a leap year 260 to 262, depending on the weekday the year starts on. 2026 has 261. Subtract holidays and vacation days to get your own working days; 52 weeks of 5 days would be exactly 260.

How many biweekly pay periods are in a year?

There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year, because 52 weeks divided by 2 is 26. Since a year is 52 weeks plus a day or two, a biweekly schedule has 27 paydays in some years.

What is the origin of the 7-day week?

The week matches no astronomical cycle. It is usually traced to the Jewish week with its Sabbath and to the planetary week of Hellenistic astrology, which named the days after the seven moving bodies visible to the eye (the Sun, the Moon and five planets). The Roman Empire spread the seven-day cycle, and the ISO standard makes Monday its first day.
