mL to Tbsp Converter (Milliliters to Tablespoons)
ConversionsChoose mL to spoons, tbsp to mL or tsp to mL, then pick US, metric or Australian spoons. You get tablespoons, teaspoons, milliliters and fluid ounces, with the steps and two charts.
Step by step
30 mL / 14.787 mL per tbsp = 2.0288 tbsp
- In the spoon size you chose, one tablespoon holds 14.787 mL and one teaspoon holds 4.929 mL.
- Tablespoons: 30 / 14.787 = 2.0288 tbsp.
- Teaspoons: 30 / 4.929 = 6.087 tsp. In US fluid ounces, divide by 29.5735: 1.0144 fl oz.

How it works
A milliliter (mL) is one thousandth of a liter, and a tablespoon is a kitchen unit of volume. How many milliliters a tablespoon holds depends on the system. A US customary tablespoon is half a US fluid ounce, exactly 14.78676478125 mL, which is usually rounded to 14.79 mL. The metric tablespoon on US nutrition labels and in most metric recipes is exactly 15 mL, and an Australian tablespoon is 20 mL. To change mL to tablespoons, divide by the mL in one tablespoon. 30 mL is 30 / 14.787 = 2.03 US tablespoons, or exactly 2 metric tablespoons.
Teaspoons work the same way. A US teaspoon is a third of a US tablespoon, 4.92892 mL, and the metric teaspoon is exactly 5 mL, which is why 5 mL is one teaspoon and not one tablespoon. A tablespoon equals 3 teaspoons in the US and metric systems and 4 teaspoons in Australia. To convert tablespoons to mL, multiply by the size of the spoon. 3 US tablespoons are 44.36 mL, and 10 metric tablespoons are 150 mL.
The gap between systems is small for one spoon, 15 mL against 14.79 mL, but it adds up: 100 mL is 6.76 US tablespoons and 6.67 metric tablespoons. In cooking, either system works. Household spoons are not accurate measuring devices for medicine, so use the syringe or cup that comes with a liquid medicine. For related units, see the tablespoons to teaspoons converter, the ml to oz converter, the cups to tablespoons converter and the grams to mL converter.
The formula
The US values are exact. The NIST handbook defines the US tablespoon as half a fluid ounce and the teaspoon as a third of a tablespoon. A gallon is 231 cubic inches, an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, and a fluid ounce is a 128th of a gallon, which gives 29.5735295625 mL. The metric spoons match the federal nutrition labeling rule: for labels, a teaspoon means 5 mL and a tablespoon means 15 mL.
Nothing is rounded until the result is shown. The tablespoons are shown to four decimals, the teaspoons to three. A recipe that says 1 tablespoon was written for one system, so use the setting that matches the cook who wrote it: American recipes usually mean the US spoon, and recipes from other countries the metric one.
Example
How many tablespoons is 30 mL?
- A US tablespoon holds 14.787 mL, so divide: 30 / 14.787 = 2.0288 tbsp.
- In teaspoons: 30 / 4.929 = 6.087 tsp. In US fluid ounces that is 1.0144 fl oz.
- With metric spoons of 15 mL, the same 30 mL is exactly 2 tablespoons or 6 teaspoons. Switch the spoon size to see it.
30 mL = 2.0288 tbsp, or 6.087 tsp.

Is 5 mL equal to 1 tablespoon?
No. 5 mL is one teaspoon in the metric system, and 4.93 mL in the US system. A tablespoon is 14.79 mL (US) or 15 mL (metric), three teaspoons. So 5 mL is only about a third of a tablespoon, 0.338 US tbsp. Choose "mL → spoons" and enter 5 to see both.
Is 1 tablespoon 30 mL?
No. One tablespoon is 14.79 mL in the US and 15 mL in the metric system. 30 mL is two tablespoons, which is one US fluid ounce (29.57 mL). The mix-up comes from the fluid ounce, which the nutrition label rounds to 30 mL. A tablespoon is half of that.
Is 1.5 mL the same as 1 tablespoon?
No, 1.5 mL is much less. It is about a tenth of a tablespoon, 0.101 US tbsp, or 0.304 US tsp, which is a bit under a third of a teaspoon. One tablespoon is 14.79 mL (US) or 15 mL (metric). The converter shows the exact figures for any small amount.
How many tbsp are in 1 mL?
1 mL is 0.0676 US tablespoons (1 / 14.787) or 0.0667 metric tablespoons (1 / 15). It is also 0.203 US teaspoons or 0.2 metric teaspoons. For quick work, remember that 15 mL is about one tablespoon and 5 mL is about one teaspoon.
How many ml in a tablespoon?
A US tablespoon is 14.78676478125 mL, about 14.79 mL. A metric tablespoon, used on nutrition labels and in most recipes outside the US, is exactly 15 mL. An Australian tablespoon is 20 mL. The converter lets you choose the system, and the chart under it lists the amounts in the system you picked.
What does mL stand for, and what does it mean?
mL stands for milliliter, a metric unit of volume. It means one thousandth of a liter, which is the same as one cubic centimeter (cm³). There are 29.57 mL in a US fluid ounce and about 237 mL in a US cup. The symbol is usually written mL, though ml is also common.
What is a milliliter?
A milliliter is a metric unit of volume equal to 1/1000 of a liter, or 1 cm³. A liter is 1,000 mL, so a 500 mL bottle holds half a liter. One mL of water weighs about one gram. In cooking, a US teaspoon is roughly 5 mL, a tablespoon roughly 15 mL and a cup roughly 240 mL.
How do I convert mL to tablespoons?
Divide the milliliters by the mL in one tablespoon: 14.787 for a US tablespoon or 15 for a metric one. 45 mL is 45 / 14.787 = 3.04 US tablespoons, or exactly 3 metric ones. To go the other way, multiply the tablespoons by the same number. The calculator does both and shows the steps.
How many tablespoons are 15, 20, 30, 50 and 100 mL?
In US tablespoons: 15 mL is 1.01, 20 mL is 1.35, 30 mL is 2.03, 50 mL is 3.38 and 100 mL is 6.76. In metric tablespoons of 15 mL: 1, 1.33, 2, 3.33 and 6.67. For 40 mL the figures are 2.71 US tbsp and 2.67 metric tbsp. Pick the system above for any other amount.
How many teaspoons or tablespoons are 2, 3 or 4 mL?
In US teaspoons, 2 mL is 0.406, 3 mL is 0.609 and 4 mL is 0.812. In tablespoons, they are 0.135, 0.203 and 0.271. With metric spoons, 2 mL is 0.4 tsp, 3 mL is 0.6 tsp and 4 mL is 0.8 tsp. Amounts this small are easier to measure with 1/4 and 1/2 teaspoon measures.
How many ml are in 1 tsp, 2 1/2 tsp or 1/2 tsp?
One US teaspoon is 4.93 mL, so 1/2 tsp is 2.46 mL and 2 1/2 tsp is 12.32 mL. With metric teaspoons of 5 mL, they are 2.5 mL, 5 mL for 1 tsp and 12.5 mL for 2 1/2 tsp. In 5 tsp there are 24.64 mL (US) or 25 mL (metric). Select "tsp → mL" to convert other amounts.
How many mL are in 2, 3 or 10 tablespoons?
2 US tablespoons are 29.57 mL (1 fl oz), 3 are 44.36 mL and 10 are 147.87 mL. With metric tablespoons of 15 mL: 30 mL, 45 mL and 150 mL. The difference is about 1.4%, so for most recipes either one works. Choose "tbsp → mL" to see any amount.
Is a US tablespoon the same as a metric tablespoon?
Almost, but not exactly. The US tablespoon is 14.79 mL and the metric tablespoon is exactly 15 mL, about 1.4% more. Nutrition labels in the US use the 15 mL spoon. An Australian tablespoon is larger at 20 mL, and holds 4 teaspoons, where the others hold 3.
Can I measure medicine with a tablespoon?
It is not a good idea. Household spoons differ in size, and the amounts in this converter are standard measuring spoons, not the spoons in a drawer. For liquid medicine, use the dosing syringe or cup that comes with it, follow the label, and ask a pharmacist when you are unsure.
