Percentage Difference Calculator
MathEnter two numbers. The calculator divides their difference by their average and shows the percent difference. Switch to percent change when one of the values is the starting point.
Step by step
|45 − 55| / ((45 + 55) / 2) × 100 = 20%
- Find the gap between the values: |45 − 55| = 10.
- Find the average of the two values: (45 + 55) / 2 = 50.
- Divide the gap by the average and multiply by 100: 10 / 50 × 100 = 20%.
Once every entry is valid, you’ll see each step of the calculation here.
Formula
- a, b
- the two values; for percent change, a is the starting value and b the new value
- |a − b|
- the absolute difference, the gap between the values without a sign
- (a + b) / 2
- the average of the two values, the base of the percent difference
How it works
The percent difference compares two values when neither one is the reference, such as the prices of the same item at two stores or two readings of the same quantity. Find the gap between them, divide it by their average, and multiply by 100. For 45 and 55 the gap is 10, the average is 50, and 10 / 50 × 100 gives a percent difference of 20%. Because the average is the base, swapping the two values changes nothing: 55 and 45 also differ by 20%.
Percent change is a different measure. It starts from an original value and asks how far the new value moved from it: (new − old) / old × 100. Going from 45 to 55 is an increase of 22.22%, while going from 55 to 45 is a decrease of 18.18%. The direction matters, and the base is the starting value, so the answer depends on which number you call first. Use percent change for before and after (a price that went up, a score that improved) and percent difference when you only want to say how far apart two values are. Choose "Percent change" above to see both numbers side by side.
This calculator takes values of zero or greater, because the average of a positive and a negative number can be close to zero and give a meaningless percentage. Percent difference is 0% for equal values and can reach at most 200%, which happens when one value is zero. Two percentages need extra care: 40% and 50% are 10 percentage points apart, which is a percent difference of 22.2%. For a percentage of a total or a change that involves negative numbers, use the percentage calculator.
The formula
The average sits halfway between the two values, so neither one is favored. That is why the percent difference is symmetric and never negative. It is the formula used in science labs when two results from different methods are checked against each other.
Percent change divides by the starting value instead, so it can be negative and it cannot be calculated when the starting value is 0. The percent difference can still be calculated as long as at least one value is above zero. Both results are shown to two decimals.
Example
The same blender costs $45 at one store and $55 at another. What is the percent difference?
- The gap between the prices is |45 − 55| = 10, and their average is (45 + 55) / 2 = 50.
- Divide the gap by the average: 10 / 50 = 0.2, then multiply by 100 to get 20%.
- If you start from the cheaper store, the second price is 22.22% higher, and if you start from the more expensive store, the first price is 18.18% lower. The percent difference of 20% does not depend on the order.
The percent difference between 45 and 55 is 20%. The values differ by 10, and their average is 50.

What is the percentage difference between two numbers?
The percentage difference is how far apart two numbers are, as a percent of their average: the gap divided by the average, times 100. The percent difference between 80 and 100 is 20 / 90 × 100 = 22.2%. It compares two values on equal terms, with neither one treated as the original.
How to calculate percentage difference on a calculator?
Subtract the smaller number from the larger one, add the two numbers and halve the sum to get the average, divide the gap by the average, and multiply by 100. For 45 and 55: 55 − 45 = 10, (45 + 55) / 2 = 50, 10 / 50 = 0.2, and 0.2 × 100 = 20%.
How do I calculate the percentage difference between two numbers in Excel?
With the values in A1 and B1, type =ABS(A1-B1)/AVERAGE(A1,B1) in another cell and format the cell as a percentage. For 45 and 55 it returns 20%. Google Sheets uses the same formula. For percent change use =(B1-A1)/A1.
How is percentage difference different from percentage change?
Percent change uses the starting value as the base and has a direction: 45 to 55 is up 22.22%, and 55 to 45 is down 18.18%. Percent difference uses the average as the base and has no direction: both pairs differ by 20%. Use change for before and after, and difference for two values on equal footing.
Which calculation mode should I choose, percent difference or percent change?
Choose percent change when one value came first, such as last year's sales and this year's. Choose percent difference when neither value is the reference, such as two stores' prices or two measurements of the same thing. In percent change mode the calculator also shows the percent difference of the same two values, so you can compare them.
How do I calculate the percentage change between two numbers?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 the change is 20, and 20 / 80 × 100 = 25%. Pick "Percent change" in the calculator, or use the percentage calculator, which also handles negative numbers.
How to calculate percentage from two percentages?
Subtract one percentage from the other to get the gap in percentage points: 50% and 40% are 10 points apart. To say how much larger one is than the other in relative terms, use percent change with the other value as the base: 50% is 25% larger than 40% (10 / 40 × 100), and 40% is 20% smaller than 50% (10 / 50 × 100). The percent difference of 22.2% (10 / 45 × 100) only says how far apart the two values are relative to their average.
Can the calculator handle negative values?
No, it takes values from zero up. The average of a positive and a negative number can come out near zero, which would make the percentage huge and meaningless. For quantities that can be negative, such as profit and loss, use the percent change in the percentage calculator.
Can percentage difference be negative?
No. The gap is taken without its sign and the average is never negative here, so the result is 0% or more. Only percent change can be negative: it shows a decrease. A percent difference of 0% means the two values are equal.
Can percent difference exceed 100%?
Yes, up to 200%. Compare 10 and 90: the gap is 80, the average is 50, and 80 / 50 × 100 = 160%. The ceiling of 200% is reached when one of the values is 0. The larger the gap compared with the average, the higher the percentage.
What if one of the numbers is zero?
Percent difference still works: any positive number against 0 gives 200%, because the gap equals twice the average. Percent change does not work when the starting value is 0, since you cannot divide by zero. Two zeros give no result, because their average is 0.
What does a percentage difference calculator do?
It takes two numbers, finds the gap between them and their average, divides the gap by the average and shows the result as a percent. This one also shows the steps, and its percent change mode gives the percent change from the first number to the second next to the percent difference.
Why use a percentage difference calculator?
The formula has several steps and it is easy to divide by the wrong number. A calculator avoids that and shows each step. In percent change mode it also shows the percent difference of the same two numbers, which makes the point that they are different figures, something many people mix up.
Where is percentage difference used in real life?
Shoppers compare the prices of the same product at two stores. Teachers compare the scores of two classes. Scientists compare two measurements of one quantity made by different methods, such as 10.2 and 9.95 m/s² for the acceleration of gravity, which differ by 2.5%. Analysts compare two groups of equal standing.
What is the difference between percent difference and percent error?
Percent error compares a measured value with an accepted one, and it divides by the accepted value: |accepted − measured| / accepted × 100. Percent difference compares two measured values and divides by their average. Use percent error when one number is the known right answer.
