Step by step

1 × 16 = 16

  1. A US gallon holds 16 cups (4 quarts, each 2 pints of 2 cups), so to get cups, multiply the gallons by 16: 1 × 16 = 16.
  2. Quarts: 1 × 4 = 4. Pints: 1 × 8 = 8. Fluid ounces: 1 × 128 = 128.
  3. Liters: a gallon is 3.785411784 L, so 1 × 3.785411784 = 3.7854.

Formula

cups = gallons × 16

How it works

There are 16 cups in a US gallon. A gallon is 4 quarts, each quart is 2 pints and each pint is 2 cups, so 4 × 2 × 2 = 16. Halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths of a gallon are whole numbers of cups: a half gallon is 8 cups, a quarter gallon is 4 cups, an eighth of a gallon is 2 cups and a sixteenth is 1 cup. Thirds and fifths are not: a third of a gallon is 5 1/3 cups and a fifth is 3.2 cups. To change gallons to cups, multiply by 16, so 2.25 gallons are 36 cups. To change cups to gallons, divide by 16: 12 cups are 0.75 gallon, 32 cups are 2 gallons, and a single cup is 1/16 gallon, or 0.0625.

The cup is the handiest unit for servings. One cup is 8 fluid ounces, so a gallon pours sixteen 8 oz glasses, and a 2 1/4 gallon dispenser serves 36 cups. Sixteen cups also make 128 fluid ounces or 3.785 liters. The counts above use the US customary cup of 236.59 mL. A cup on a US nutrition label is 240 mL, which makes a gallon 15.77 label cups, and the metric cup of Canada, Australia and New Zealand is 250 mL, which makes it 15.14 metric cups.

Gallons differ between countries. The imperial gallon of the UK is 4.546 liters, about 20% larger than the US gallon of 3.785 liters, and it holds about 19.2 US cups. This converter uses the US gallon. For quarts, ounces and liters, see the quarts in a gallon converter, the ounces in a gallon converter and the gallons to liters converter; for smaller amounts, see the cups in a quart converter.

The formula

The 16 follows from the definitions: a gallon is 128 fluid ounces, a cup is 8 fluid ounces, and 128 / 8 = 16. A gallon of 231 cubic inches is 3,785.411784 mL, because an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so one sixteenth of it, a cup, is exactly 236.5882365 mL. The calculation keeps full precision and trims digits only for display.

Quarts are gallons × 4, pints are gallons × 8 and fluid ounces are gallons × 128. The gallon fraction for cups uses the cups exactly as typed, up to three decimals, so 36 cups give 2 1/4 gallons and 6 cups give 3/8.

Example

A 5 gallon water cooler jug holds how many cups?

  1. 5 gallons × 16 cups per gallon = 80 cups.
  2. That is also 20 quarts or 640 fluid ounces, enough for 80 servings of 1 cup each.

5 gallons = 80 cups, or 18.9271 liters.

Frequently asked questions

How many cups are in a gallon?

There are 16 cups in a US gallon. A half gallon is 8 cups, a quarter gallon (1 quart) is 4 cups and an eighth of a gallon (1 pint) is 2 cups. Each cup is 1/16 of a gallon, or 0.0625 gallon.

How many gallons are in a cup?

A cup is 1/16 of a gallon, which is 0.0625 gallon. Two cups are 1/8 gallon, 4 cups are 1/4 gallon and 8 cups are 1/2 gallon. Divide the cups by 16 to get gallons.

Does 4 cups make a half gallon?

No. 4 cups make a quart, which is a quarter of a gallon. A half gallon is 8 cups, or 2 quarts.

Is 12 cups of water a gallon?

No. 12 cups are 3/4 of a gallon (0.75 gallon), which is 3 quarts. A gallon needs 16 cups, so you would add 4 more cups.

How many cups are in a half gallon of milk?

A half gallon is 8 cups, whether it holds milk, juice, ice cream or buttermilk, because the unit measures volume. Two quart containers make a half gallon.

How many quarts are in a gallon?

A gallon is 4 quarts, so 16 cups / 4 gives 4 cups in each quart. That is also 8 pints. Two quarts are 8 cups, which is why half a gallon is 2 quarts.

How many cups are in 2 quarts?

2 quarts are 8 cups, because a quart is 4 cups. Three quarts are 12 cups and four quarts are 16 cups, a full gallon.

How many cups are in a pint?

A pint is 2 cups, so 8 pints are 16 cups, the same as 1 gallon. A pint is also 16 fluid ounces.

How many ounces are in a gallon, a half gallon, a quart, a pint and a cup?

A gallon is 128 fluid ounces, a half gallon is 64, a quart is 32, a pint is 16 and a cup is 8. That holds for a gallon of water, milk or ice cream alike, because the unit measures volume. A cup of 8 fluid ounces is 1/16 of the 128 in a gallon. The ounces in a gallon converter and the ounces in a quart converter go into more detail.

How many 8 oz glasses does it take to make a gallon?

It takes 16 glasses of 8 fluid ounces, because a gallon is 128 fluid ounces and each such glass is exactly one cup. With 12 oz glasses a gallon fills 10 2/3 glasses, and with 16 oz glasses 8.

How many 16.9-ounce bottles are in a gallon?

A gallon holds about 7.57 bottles of 16.9 fluid ounces, since 128 / 16.9 = 7.57. Eight such bottles hold 135.2 fluid ounces, a little more than a gallon. A 500 mL bottle is 16.9 fluid ounces, so the same count applies to it.

A drink dispenser holds 2 1/4 gallons. How many cups can it serve?

It serves 36 cups of 8 fluid ounces. Multiply the gallons by 16: 2.25 × 16 = 36. That is also 9 quarts or 288 fluid ounces.

How are the US system, British imperial system and metric system different when measuring volume?

The US system uses a gallon of exactly 231 cubic inches, which is 3.785 liters and 16 cups of 236.59 mL. The British imperial system uses a larger gallon of 4.546 liters, about 20% more, which holds about 19.2 US cups. The metric system counts in liters and milliliters. Cups differ too: the US nutrition label cup is 240 mL and the metric cup of Canada, Australia and New Zealand is 250 mL.

How many quarts are in a liter?

A liter is 1.057 US quarts, or about 4.23 US cups. A US quart is slightly smaller than a liter, at 0.946 liter, and a gallon is 3.785 liters.
