How it works

The countdown counts calendar days from the start date to Christmas Day, December 25. The start date counts and Christmas Day itself does not, so on December 24 there is 1 day left and on December 25 there are 0. Once December 25 has passed, the countdown moves on to next year’s Christmas.

Hours and minutes are whole days times 24 and times 1,440, counted from midnight to midnight; the calculator does not read the time of day, so in the evening there are fewer real hours left than it shows. In “sleeps”, the way kids count, the number of days is the number of nights left: 3 days before Christmas means 3 sleeps.

The formula

Each date is turned into a day number on the Gregorian calendar and the numbers are subtracted, so month lengths and leap years are handled exactly. From December 26 on, the next Christmas is a year away: 364 days, or 365 when the next February has 29 days.

The weekday Christmas falls on moves forward one day each year and two days after a leap day. In 2026 Christmas is a Friday; in 2027 it is a Saturday.
