Grams to kg Converter

Conversions

Pick grams to kg or kg to grams and enter the amount. One kilogram is exactly 1,000 grams, so the converter divides or multiplies by 1,000 and also shows milligrams, hectograms and metric tons.

Step by step

500 g / 1,000 = 0.5 kg

  1. A gram is 0.001 kg, so divide by 1,000: 500 / 1,000 = 0.5 kg.
  2. In hectograms, divide by 100: 500 / 100 = 5 hg.

Formula

kg = g / 1,000
hg = g / 100 = kg × 10
g
mass in grams: 1 g = 0.001 kg
kg
mass in kilograms, the SI unit of mass
hg
mass in hectograms: 1 hg = 100 g, so 1 kg = 10 hg

How it works

A kilogram (kg) is the SI base unit of mass, and a gram (g) is one thousandth of it, because the prefix kilo means 1,000. That makes 1 kg = 1,000 g. To change grams to kilograms, divide by 1,000: 250 g is 0.25 kg. To change kilograms to grams, multiply by 1,000: 2.5 kg is 2,500 g. In practice you move the decimal point three places, to the left for grams to kg and to the right for kg to grams. The factor is exact, so the only rounding is in the number shown on screen.

The converter also shows the same mass in milligrams (1 g = 1,000 mg), hectograms (1 hg = 100 g, so 1 kg = 10 hg) and metric tons (1 t = 1,000 kg = 1,000,000 g). A metric ton, also called a tonne, is not the US ton of 2,000 pounds: the US short ton is 907.18474 kg. The symbols are g for gram and kg for kilogram, never Kg or kgs. You will also see gm for grams, as in "gm to kg", and gr. The SI symbol is g, and gr is the symbol of the grain, an old unit of mass equal to 64.79891 mg.

Kilograms and grams are how most of the world weighs things, while US scales and packages mostly use pounds and ounces. For those, use the grams to pounds converter, the kg to lbs converter and the ounces to pounds converter. A gram of flour and a gram of sugar fill different volumes, so changing grams to cups needs the ingredient, which the grams to cups converter takes into account; the mL to oz converter handles liquids by volume. The two charts under the converter list common amounts, from the 10 g of a spice jar to the 100 kg of a shipment.

The formula

SI prefixes are powers of ten: kilo is 10³, hecto is 10² and milli is 10⁻³ (BIPM prefix table). The kilogram is the one SI base unit whose name already contains a prefix, so the multiples and submultiples of mass are built on the gram, which is why the unit is the milligram and not the microkilogram.

Since 2019 the kilogram has been defined by fixing the value of the Planck constant, not by the metal cylinder kept near Paris. The relationship between the gram and the kilogram did not change: it is still exactly 1,000. The grams field accepts values from 0 to 1,000,000,000,000 g, and the kilograms field from 0 to 1,000,000,000 kg.

Example

A European recipe calls for 750 g of flour. How many kilograms is that?

  1. A kilogram is 1,000 g, so divide: 750 / 1,000 = 0.75 kg.
  2. In milligrams that is 750 × 1,000 = 750,000 mg, and in hectograms 750 / 100 = 7.5 hg.
  3. So the flour is three quarters of a kilogram, and four batches of the recipe would need exactly 3 kg.

750 g equals 0.75 kg.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1000 grams 1 kg?

Yes. 1,000 grams is exactly 1 kilogram, because kilo means 1,000. Likewise 2,000 g is 2 kg and 500 g is half a kilogram. This is a definition, so it does not depend on what you are weighing or on the scale.

How do you convert grams to kg?

Divide the grams by 1,000, which moves the decimal point three places to the left. 750 g is 0.75 kg, 120 g is 0.12 kg and 5 g is 0.005 kg. Pick "g → kg" above, type the grams and read the kilograms.

How many grams make 1 kg?

1,000 grams makes 1 kilogram (1 kg). A half kilogram is 500 g, a quarter kilogram is 250 g and a tenth of a kilogram is 100 g. To go the other way, multiply the kilograms by 1,000: 2.5 kg is 2,500 g.

How do I convert 1 g to 1 kg?

You can't make them equal: 1 gram is only 0.001 kg, one thousandth of a kilogram. For 1 kg you need 1,000 g. To convert any number of grams, divide by 1,000, so 1 g becomes 0.001 kg.

What is the grams to kg conversion factor?

The factor is 1,000. Multiply kilograms by 1,000 to get grams, or divide grams by 1,000 to get kilograms. In decimal form, 1 g = 0.001 kg. It is exact, because the SI prefix kilo is defined as 10³.

How do I convert kg to grams?

Multiply the kilograms by 1,000, which moves the decimal point three places to the right. 0.75 kg is 750 g, 3 kg is 3,000 g and 0.05 kg is 50 g. Pick "kg → g" above and the converter does it for you.

How many kilos is 1,000 grams, 500 grams or 100 grams?

A kilo is short for kilogram. 1,000 grams is 1 kilo, 500 grams is 0.5 kilo and 100 grams is 0.1 kilo. Divide the grams by 1,000 for any other amount, so 250 grams is 0.25 kilo.

What does gm mean in gm to kg?

It stands for grams. "gm" is a common abbreviation, but the SI symbol is "g". Converting gm to kg works the same way: divide by 1,000, so 450 gm is 0.45 kg.

What does kg to gr mean?

People often write gr for grams, so kg to gr means kilograms to grams: multiply by 1,000. Be careful, because gr is also the symbol of the grain, a small unit equal to 64.79891 mg. One kilogram is 1,000 g, which is about 15,432 grains.

How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?

Multiply by 1,000. One gram per cubic centimeter is 1,000 kilograms per cubic meter, so water at about 1 g/cm³ is about 1,000 kg/m³. This page converts mass only; for density, mass and volume together, use the density calculator.

How many grams are in a pound and in an ounce?

An avoirdupois pound is exactly 453.59237 g and an ounce is exactly 28.349523125 g. So 1 kg is about 2.2046 pounds or 35.274 ounces. The grams to pounds converter shows the answer in pounds and ounces.

Is a metric ton the same as a ton in the US?

No. A metric ton (tonne) is 1,000 kg, or 1,000,000 g. The common US ton is the short ton of 2,000 pounds, which is 907.18474 kg, about 9% less. A quote "per ton" can mean either, so check which one it is.
