MPH to KM/H and KM/H to MPH
ConversionsChoose a direction and enter the speed. The converter uses the exact length of a mile, 1.609344 km, and also shows the speed in meters per second. A chart of common speeds follows below.
Step by step
60 × 1.609344 = 96.56 km/h
- A mile is exactly 1.609344 km: 60 × 1.609344 = 96.56 km/h.
- In meters per second: 96.56 / 3.6 = 26.82 m/s.

- meters per second
How it works
A mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometers, so a speed of one mile per hour is exactly 1.609344 km/h. To convert mph to km/h, multiply by 1.609344: 65 mph are 104.61 km/h. To convert km/h to mph, divide by 1.609344: 100 km/h are 62.14 mph.
Canada, Mexico and almost every country outside the US and the UK post speed limits in kilometers per hour. A handy mental check: km/h times 0.6 is close to mph (100 km/h ≈ 60 mph, exactly 62.1), and mph times 1.6 is close to km/h. The converter always uses the exact factor.
Meters per second, shown as well, is the SI unit of speed used in science and for wind: km/h divided by 3.6. 60 mph are 26.82 m/s. For distances rather than speeds, use the km to miles converter.
The formula
The factor follows from the definition of the mile: 1,760 yards of exactly 0.9144 meters each, 1,609.344 meters. An hour has 3,600 seconds, which is where the 3.6 for meters per second comes from (1,000 m / 3,600 s).
Dividing by 1.609344 is the same as multiplying by 0.621371. The chart lists common speeds in steps of 5 mph up to 100 mph and in steps of 10 mph above.
Example
A sign in Canada says 100 km/h. How fast is that in mph?
- Divide by 1.609344: 100 / 1.609344 = 62.14 mph.
- So 100 km/h is a bit above 60 mph, like a typical US highway limit of 60 to 65 mph.
100 km/h is 62.14 mph.
