Step by step

10,000 × 27.26 in / 63,360 = 4.3 miles

  1. Height: 5 ft × 12 + 6 in = 66 inches.
  2. Stride = height × 0.413 = 66 × 0.413 = 27.26 inches, or 2.27 feet.
  3. Miles = steps × stride / 63,360 = 10,000 × 27.26 / 63,360 = 4.3.
  4. Kilometers = 4.3 × 1.609344 = 6.92. Steps in one mile = 63,360 / 27.26 = 2,324.
  5. Time = 4.3 miles / 3 mph × 60 = 1:26 hrs.

Formula

miles = steps × stride (inches) / 63,360
stride (inches) = height (inches) × 0.413 for women, × 0.415 for men
steps in one mile = 63,360 / stride (inches)
km = miles × 1.609344

How it works

To turn steps into miles, multiply the number of steps by the length of one step, then divide by the 5,280 feet in a mile: miles = steps × stride in feet / 5,280. With a stride of 2.5 feet (30 inches), 10,000 steps cover 25,000 feet, which is about 4.7 miles or 7.6 km. The calculator does the same sum in inches, with 63,360 inches in a mile. It also shows how many steps make one mile, which is 63,360 divided by your stride in inches: a 30 inch stride gives 2,112 steps.

The stride is the part that differs from person to person. Many fitness trackers estimate it from height and sex, and this page uses the common rule of thumb of 0.413 × height for women and 0.415 × height for men. A woman who is 66 inches tall (5 ft 6 in) gets a stride of 27.3 inches, so 10,000 steps come to about 4.3 miles. The rule is an estimate for an average walker on level ground, not a measurement of you. A study of healthy adults found that gait measures such as stride length depend mainly on height and walking speed, and another found that stride length gets shorter with age, so a stride you measured yourself beats the rule. Walk 20 normal steps, measure the distance in inches, divide by 20 and choose "My own stride length".

The pace you pick changes only the time, never the distance, because the same stride is used at every pace. The time is the miles divided by your speed in miles per hour: 4.3 miles at 3 mph take about 1 hour 26 minutes. Studies of pedestrians at crosswalks put the average walking speed at about 3.1 mph, and a brisk walk can be around 4 mph. Jogging and running strides are longer than walking strides, so if you run, count your steps over a known distance and use that stride instead of the height rule. To change a height in centimeters into feet and inches, use the cm to feet converter. For other distances, see the km to miles converter and the feet to miles converter, and to put your pace in kilometers per hour, use the mph to km/h converter.

The formula

A mile is 5,280 feet, which is 63,360 inches. An inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so a mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters or 1.609344 km. The distance is the steps times the stride, expressed in miles by dividing by 63,360, and the kilometers follow by multiplying the miles by 1.609344. The steps in a mile are the inches in a mile divided by the inches in one step.

The height rule gives a stride of 24.8 inches for a woman who is 5 ft tall and 31.5 inches for a man who is 6 ft 4 in tall, which is about 2,000 to 2,600 steps in a mile across that range of heights. Nothing in the rule accounts for age, leg length, fitness, terrain, load or how fast you move, so treat the result as an estimate and use a measured stride when you want more accuracy.

Example

A woman who is 5 ft 6 in tall counts 10,000 steps on a walk. How far did she go?

  1. Her height is 5 × 12 + 6 = 66 inches, so her estimated stride is 66 × 0.413 = 27.26 inches.
  2. The distance is 10,000 × 27.26 / 63,360 = 4.3 miles, which is 6.92 km. One mile takes her about 2,324 steps.
  3. At a walking speed of 3 mph, 4.3 miles take 1:26 hrs.

With an estimated stride of 27.26 inches (2.27 feet), 10,000 steps come to 4.30 miles, or 6.92 km. That takes about 1:26 hrs at your chosen pace, and one mile is about 2,324 steps.

Frequently asked questions

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

For most adults, 10,000 steps come to about 4 to 5 miles. With the height rule on this page, a woman who is 5 ft 6 in tall covers about 4.3 miles (6.9 km), a man who is 5 ft 10 in tall about 4.6 miles and a man who is 6 ft tall about 4.7 miles. A fixed 30 inch stride gives 4.73 miles. Enter your height above for your own figure.

Is 5,000 steps 3 miles?

Usually not. With the height rule, 5,000 steps are about 2 to 2.5 miles: 1.96 miles for a woman who is 5 ft tall and 2.49 miles for a man who is 6 ft 4 in tall. To make 3 miles in 5,000 steps you would need a stride of 38 inches, well above the 25 to 32 inches that the height rule gives for adults from 5 ft to 6 ft 4 in tall.

How many steps are in a mile?

By the height rule, most adults need about 2,000 to 2,600 steps to walk a mile. Divide 63,360 (the inches in a mile) by your stride in inches: a 27 inch stride gives about 2,350 steps and a 30 inch stride gives 2,112. A woman who is 5 ft 6 in tall needs about 2,324 steps, and a man who is 6 ft tall needs about 2,120. The chart under the calculator lists nine heights.

How do you convert steps to miles?

Multiply the steps by your stride length in feet, then divide by 5,280. For 10,000 steps with a stride of 2.3 feet, that is 10,000 × 2.3 / 5,280 = 4.36 miles. If you do not know your stride, estimate it as 0.413 times your height for women or 0.415 times your height for men, or measure it by walking 20 steps and dividing the distance by 20.

How do I calculate the steps in a mile?

Take the inches in a mile, 63,360, and divide by your stride length in inches. A stride of 24 inches gives 2,640 steps per mile, 28 inches gives 2,263 and 32 inches gives 1,980. To get your stride, multiply your height in inches by 0.413 (women) or 0.415 (men), or measure it. The calculator shows the steps in one mile as one of its results.

How many miles is 20,000 steps?

Twenty thousand steps are twice 10,000, so about 8 to 10 miles for most adults: 8.6 miles (13.8 km) for a woman who is 5 ft 6 in tall and 9.4 miles for a man who is 6 ft tall, using the height rule. At a walking speed of 3 mph, 8.6 miles take about 2 hours 52 minutes. Pick 20,000 in the steps field to see your own distance.

What is 10K steps in miles?

10K steps are 10,000 steps, which is about 4.3 miles for a woman or a man who is 5 ft 6 in tall. That is not the same as a 10K run: a 10K race is 10 kilometers, about 6.2 miles, which takes roughly 12,500 to 16,000 steps at the strides the height rule gives.

Does age affect step or stride length?

Yes. A study of 239 healthy adults aged 19 to 90 found that preferred walking speed and stride length decline with age. Height and body weight explained part of that difference. For an older adult, a stride measured over a known distance is therefore a better choice than the height rule.

How many steps is enough?

There is no single number. A meta-analysis of 15 studies with 47,471 adults found that the risk of dying from any cause kept falling as daily steps rose, up to about 6,000 to 8,000 steps for adults 60 and older and 8,000 to 10,000 for adults younger than 60. These are associations, not proof of cause. The 10,000 steps target began in a marketing campaign for a pedometer, and any increase in steps is better than none.

How much should a person walk a day?

The World Health Organization recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week, which is about 21 minutes a day, and says any amount of activity is better than none. Walking is one of the popular ways to be active that it lists. At a brisk 4 mph, 30 minutes cover 2 miles, which is about 4,650 steps for a woman who is 5 ft 6 in tall.

How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?

It depends on your stride and speed. A woman who is 5 ft 6 in tall covers about 4.3 miles in 10,000 steps, which takes about 2 hours 9 minutes at a slow 2 mph, 1 hour 26 minutes at an average 3 mph and 1 hour 5 minutes at a brisk 4 mph. Choose your pace in the calculator for the exact time.

How many miles is 10,000 steps on a treadmill?

The arithmetic is the same, so a stride of 27 to 30 inches gives roughly 4.3 to 4.7 miles. A treadmill console normally works out its distance from belt speed and time, which does not depend on your stride, so its reading can differ from this estimate. Use whichever one you can trust more: the belt for distance, your own measured stride for step counts.

What are the average steps in a mile?

By the height rule, a mile takes about 2,000 to 2,600 steps when walking: 2,557 steps for a woman who is 5 ft tall, 2,324 for a woman who is 5 ft 6 in tall, 2,181 for a man who is 5 ft 10 in tall and 2,009 for a man who is 6 ft 4 in tall. Taller people take longer steps and need fewer of them.

How do I measure my own stride length?

Mark a start line on a flat path, walk 20 normal steps and mark where your last foot lands. Measure the distance from the start in inches and divide by 20. Repeat once or twice and average the results. Choose "My own stride length" in the calculator and type the answer. Do this at the pace you plan to use, since running strides are longer than walking strides.

Why does my watch or phone show a different distance?

Devices estimate distance in different ways. Many fitness trackers multiply your steps by a stride length they derive from the height and sex in your profile, and some use GPS instead. A different stride setting, a different step count or a GPS error will each change the distance. Compare the stride your device uses with the one on this page.

How many steps is a kilometer?

About 1,250 to 1,600 steps, depending on stride. A kilometer is 1,000 meters, or 39,370 inches. With the height rule that is about 1,444 steps for a woman who is 5 ft 6 in tall, 1,589 for a woman who is 5 ft tall and 1,248 for a man who is 6 ft 4 in tall. The calculator shows the kilometers for any number of steps.
