Step by step

1 × 2 = 2

  1. A US pint holds 2 cups (16 fluid ounces divided by 8), so to get cups, multiply the pints by 2: 1 × 2 = 2.
  2. Fluid ounces: 1 × 16 = 16. Quarts: 1 / 2 = 0.5.
  3. Milliliters: a pint is 473.176473 mL, so 1 × 473.176473 = 473.18.

Formula

cups = pints × 2
1 pint = 2 cups = 16 fl oz = ½ quart
1 pint = 473.176473 mL

How it works

There are 2 cups in a US pint. A cup is 8 fluid ounces and a pint is 16 fluid ounces, so 16 / 8 = 2. A pint is also half a quart and an eighth of a gallon, which means a quart is 4 cups and a gallon is 16 cups. To change pints to cups, multiply by 2: 2.5 pints are 5 cups. To change cups to pints, divide by 2: 3 cups are 1 1/2 pints, and a single cup is half a pint. A pint of ice cream therefore holds four half-cup portions.

Not every pint is the same size, so check which one a label or recipe means. The US liquid pint used in recipes, milk and ice cream is 473.18 mL, or 16 US fluid ounces. The US dry pint used for berries and cherry tomatoes is a measure of volume too, 33.6 cubic inches or 550.61 mL, about 18.6 US fluid ounces. The imperial pint of the UK is 568.26 mL and holds 20 imperial fluid ounces, about 19.2 US fluid ounces or 2.4 US cups. This converter uses the US liquid pint and the US customary cup of 236.59 mL. A cup on a US nutrition label is rounded to 240 mL, and the metric cup used in Canada and Australia is 250 mL.

Pints and cups measure volume, so the answer is the same for water, milk, cream or stock. Dry ingredients such as flour and sugar are measured in cups the same way, but their weight in ounces or grams varies with the ingredient. For bigger and smaller kitchen units, see the cups in a quart converter, the cups in a gallon converter and the cups to ounces converter, and for spoons, the tablespoons in a cup converter.

The formula

The 2 follows from the definitions: a pint is 16 fluid ounces, a cup is 8 fluid ounces, and 16 / 8 = 2. A gallon of 231 cubic inches is exactly 3,785.411784 mL, because an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so a pint is one eighth of it, 473.176473 mL, and a cup is 236.5882365 mL. The calculation keeps full precision and trims digits only for display.

Quarts are pints / 2 and fluid ounces are pints × 16. The fraction of a pint for cups uses the cups exactly as typed, up to three decimals, so 3 cups give 1 1/2 pints and 7 cups give 3 1/2.

Example

A recipe calls for 2 1/2 pints of cream. How many cups is that?

  1. 2.5 pints × 2 cups per pint = 5 cups.
  2. That is also 40 fluid ounces, 1.25 quarts or 1,182.94 milliliters.

2.5 pints = 5 cups, or 40 fluid ounces.

Frequently asked questions

How many cups are in a pint?

There are 2 cups in a US pint. Each cup is half a pint, or 0.5 pint. Four cups make 2 pints (1 quart), and 16 cups make 8 pints (1 gallon). The pint is also 16 fluid ounces, so the cup is 8.

Does a pint equal a cup?

No. A pint is 2 cups, so a cup is only half a pint. If a recipe lists 1 pint of milk, measure 2 cups, and if it asks for 1 cup, you need half a pint. The two units are easy to mix up because both are used for milk and cream.

How many cups are in a pint and a half, or in two and a half pints?

A pint and a half is 3 cups, because 1.5 × 2 = 3. Two and a half pints are 5 cups, because 2.5 × 2 = 5. For other amounts, multiply the pints by 2, or use the pints to cups chart under the converter.

How many half cups are in a pint of ice cream?

There are 4 half-cup portions in a pint. A pint holds 2 cups, and each cup holds two half cups, so half a cup of ice cream is a quarter of the pint.

How many pints are in a gallon, and how many in a quart?

A US gallon holds 8 pints and a quart holds 2 pints. A half gallon is 4 pints. Going the other way, a pint is 1/8 of a gallon and half of a quart, or 0.125 gallon and 0.5 quart.

How many cups are in a quart, a half gallon and a gallon?

A quart is 4 cups, a half gallon is 8 cups and a gallon is 16 cups. Each step doubles the one before it, because a quart is 2 pints, a half gallon is 2 quarts and a gallon is 2 half gallons.

How many ounces are in a pint, a cup, a gallon and a half gallon?

A pint is 16 fluid ounces, a cup is 8, a gallon is 128 and a half gallon is 64. Those are fluid ounces, a measure of volume. They hold for any liquid, from water to cream, because the unit measures volume and not weight.

Does 16 ounces equal a pint?

Yes, if you mean fluid ounces: a US pint holds 16 fluid ounces. Ounces on a kitchen scale measure weight. A pint of water weighs about 1.04 pounds, which is about 16.7 ounces by weight, so the two kinds of ounces are close for water but are different units.

How many ounces are in a pound?

There are 16 ounces in a pound, counting ounces of weight. The fluid ounce is a different unit, so a pint of 16 fluid ounces is not automatically a pound. What a pint weighs depends on the liquid: water is about 1.04 pounds, and oil is lighter.

How many ounces are in a tablespoon?

A US tablespoon is half a fluid ounce, so 2 tablespoons make 1 fluid ounce. A cup holds 16 tablespoons and a pint holds 32. For spoon conversions, see the tablespoons in a cup converter.

How many ounces are in a pint of beer?

A US pint of beer is 16 fluid ounces. A British pint is bigger, 20 imperial fluid ounces or 568 mL, which is about 19.2 US fluid ounces. A bar may serve a pint glass of any size, so a menu that says 16 oz or 20 oz tells you the real amount.

How many ounces are in a dry pint of blueberries?

A dry pint is a measure of volume, 33.6 cubic inches, which is about 18.6 US fluid ounces. How many ounces by weight a pint of blueberries holds depends on the size of the berries and how they pack, so there is no fixed number. Check the weight on the label.

What is the difference between a liquid pint, a dry pint and a UK pint?

The US liquid pint is 473.18 mL, the US dry pint is 550.61 mL and the imperial pint of the UK is 568.26 mL. Recipes, milk and ice cream use the liquid pint, berries are sold by the dry pint and British recipes use the imperial pint. This converter uses the liquid pint.

How many pints are in a cup?

A cup is 0.5 pint, or half a pint. Two cups are 1 pint, 3 cups are 1 1/2 pints and 10 cups are 5 pints. Divide the cups by 2 to get pints.
